In the novel A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, there is specific gender stereotypes that are portrayed in the novel which challenges those of our contemporary society. These gender roles that are presented in the novel mainly portray an old-fashioned society. In the novel, Lena is seen as the typical female gender role of the 1940s/1950s which is particularly seen when she states,”“He finally come into his manhood today, didn’t he? Kind of like a rainbow after the rain...”(Hansberry 3.1.151)”. With her expression as presented in this quote, it shows the old cult of domesticity female gender role in society. On the other hand, the Beneatha represents the new and emerging female role in society breaking the typical gender stereotypes
