ABC’s sitcom, Modern Family, was first aired on September 23, 2009 and the series is currently on their 9th season. This sitcom has been nominated or has won many awards: Emmy Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, etc. One of the reasons that show is popular is because it is easy for the audience to follow along and relate to.
Modern Family uses a different take on the normal conservative family. The nuclear family is having a different meaning because of the changing in culture and the representation of what the perfect “American Family” appears like, compared to the past. The sitcom Modern Family portrays three “modern” families who live in California. For example, Cameron is a masculine man, who likes sports and played football in High School, but he is the “women” in the relationship who shows the feminine traits and wants to be a stay at home dad. As for Gloria, being smart and having moral standards for her son she wants Manny to stay intact to his Columbian culture and he cannot even speak Spanish and she has the final say over him because she is his mother. Gloria also grew up in different circumstances, she had to learn a new language, her mother criticized her, and she learned a lot about life by her own experiences. However, for Claire, she tries to defy the normal stereotype in “Hit and Run”, Season 3, Episode 5, and runs for town council but her opponent who is a man calls Claire a “bored housewife”.
