Groves High School has a set of rules that set a certain standard for its students. In the book Tangled Threads: A Hmong Girl Story by Pegi Deitz Shea and If you come softly by Jacqueline Woodson both sets of characters go through similar situations. In Tangled Threads, main character, Mai Yang is deported to the U.S from a refugee camp in Thailand, after the devastating war in her hometown Laoz. Once she finally gets to America after a agonizing 10 years she learns to deal with the newly found American customs but still keep in touch with her Hmong roots. In If you come softly, main characters Elie and Miah, juggle the obstacles and society’s opinion on being an interracial couple in the 1990’s.
In the book, Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton Ethan is the main character. Ethan starts off in the story as a pushover but as the story goes along he gains a backbone against the protagonist, Zenna. Ethan is a round and dynamic character. In the beginning of the story when they go back in time you can tell that he doesn’t speak too much and is kinda detached from the rest of the town.

It was seen as though family members and married couples should stay together and take care of each other no matter what. In this week 's set of readings, Damien focuses more on his childhood and life before prison. He talks about many different life altering events such as religion and relationships. One quote that stood out to me was when he was re encountering the first time he saw Deanna. He states, "she was wearing a pair of slacks that were so tight many would call them vulgar, and a low-cut blouse one could only say matched the slacks" (Echols, 126). A little further down he continues with, "this girl who reeked of sex" (Echols, 126).
Ethan’s bad choices of leaving school, feeling lonely and marrying Zeena and then also being avoidant when he wants to leave her. Obviously, Ethan Frome’s tragedy is all caused by his personal decisions. One of many ignorant choices Ethan makes is when his mother gets ill, somewhere in the beginning of the story. During this time, Ethan dropped out of college.
He makes a plan to run away with Mattie to the West and begin a new life. He meets a friends in town who tells Ethan, “You’ve had an awful mean time, Ethan Frome.” Before this moment, Ethan had seen his discontented way of life, but assumed it not an original case faced by only him. After these good natured words, Ethans sees his state for how awful it truly is. He sees that his plan to leave to the West is wholly unrealistic leaving stuck to remain is his miserable state until the end of his days.
A stereotype is how people see you according to others around you or a particular characteristic. A choice is a decision you make when faced with two or more possibilities. Which one do you think shows who you are as a person? In The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy is constantly stereotyped for things that do not relate to him as a person. Though, he makes a life-changing choice to save kids in a burning church, which changes the perspective of how people have seen him his entire life.
One stereotype talked about by Gillespie was that, “only beboppers wore beards, goatees, and other facial hair and adornments.” (Walser, 157). Gillespie had an issue with this because when he shaved it the stubble that grew back made it uncomfortable for him to play with his mouth piece (Walser, 157). Dizzy therefore decided to grow it out to prevent the mouth piece problems and he liked the fact that it attracted the women around him (Walser, 157). Another stereotype was that, “beboppers spoke mostly in slang or tried to talk like Negroes.”

Ethan is 13 and from a family of six and lives with his parents, Mark and Christie Figert with his younger brother Oliver (5), younger sister Lily (8), and older sister Emily (15). Ethan loves going on vacations with his family, but his favorite is when he went to Michigan.
Annotated Bibliography Introduction: Examine different kinds of advertisements and the problem at hand with how they perpetuate stereotypes, such as; gender, race, and religion. Thesis: The problem in society today is in the industry of social media. In efforts to attract the eye of the general population, advertising companies create billboards, commercials, flyers and other ads with stereotypes that are accepted in today’s society. Because of the nations’ cultural expectation for all different types of people, advertisement businesses follow and portray exactly what and how each specific gender, race, or religion should be.
Lulu Asselstine Mrs. Olsen LA 8 5 November, 2017 Stereotypes and Perspectives When looking at a bunch of bananas in a grocery store, people tend to choose the perfect spotless bananas, since stereotypically food that is perfect looking, with no flaws, taste better. However, people soon realize that when you start to eat bananas that have more spots and are imperfect they turn out to be sweeter and better. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. This connects to The Outsiders because Ponyboy realizes this after he talks with two Socs, kids from a rival group named Randy and Cherry. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton presents the idea that teenagers can break through stereotypes if they look at life through another perspective; as shown in the book when Ponyboy starts to talk to Cherry and Randy and realizes the stereotypes about them are false.
Stereotyping is an issue that affects all ages, genders, and races. Not all stereotypes are bad, but when you maliciously stereotype it becomes a problem. In S.E. Hinton’s young adult novel The Outsiders, stereotyping is a significant issue. There are two gangs in this novel, the “greasers”, and the “Socs”. The greasers live on the east side and are known as “hoods”.
