If we are presented with a number, or a set of numbers by themselves in no context, it would be impossible to understand what they signify. In order to comprehend the meaning of numbers, we rely on context clues in the material surrounding the numbers to fully make sense of what they represent. The reason numbers are so important is because they provide us with facts. Instead of guessing, numbers show us a precise amount, that provides a sense of comfort to know the actual information, rather than just an approximation. Except, with the recent increase of fake news, mixed in with regular media, even using context clue is pointless. Fake news ties not only into the problems with today’s media, but also with communication, and real numerical facts. Although this may seem like a one hundred and eighty degree turn, similar to how a fake news article deals with current and emotional views, a poll allows us to visualize how the nation, or a select population of people, depending on the purpose of the survey, feels about a certain topic. While they are in no doubt an efficient way to collect large amount of data, if done incorrectly, errors can occur quite frequently, screwing or producing misleading results. Often overlooked, the who, how, and when a poll was taken can greatly affect the results. In some cases, “researchers” could manipulate these factors in order to get a desirable end result. After doing some research on their website, I found some interesting results. Since the hot topic right now in almost all American lives right now is the President, I decided to take a look at polls regarding Donald Trump, and his administration. Before I share the results, I feel it is necessary to validate this website, before I can validate the data it presents. While the website itself is not glamorous, and may even look a little sketchy, it contains numerous reasons and claims as to why it is valid. Not only was it written about by TIME and FORBES, they have their own twitter and facebook account, which shows they are not trying to hide themselves, and do not mind being contacted. These were noted as important things to look for when decided whether or not a source is valid by the video we watched in class about fake news. The video also suggested that the title should be unbiased, which “President Trump and the Trump Administration” is very much so. The poll results I found were from only four days ago (Jan. 25), and included results from early 2017 as well, which makes the informations not only current, but also comparable. It is important to note that population of this poll is 1,245 registered voters nationwide, which rules out any bias from non-voters.
