Minorities experience our world in different ways to the majority because of society's stereotypes about them. In texts ‘Freedom Writers’ and ‘The Hate U Give’, the composers focus on the perspective of multicultural Americans. Freedom Writers is a film that shows viewers the experiences of people of minorities in contrast to white people. It displays gang violence and how students of Mrs Gruwell’s class find their own identities and begin to understand their harmful actions, in order to pursue less criminal activities and change their lifestyle. In the text ‘THUG’, we view the police force as a representation gang as they protect officer 115 and justify his actions after the death of Khalil. Starr strongly dislikes the officer, and the police force due to Khalil’s murder and many seek justice for him, but from the police’s perspective they are more concerned with protecting each other and not so much the community they serve. Throughout the novel we see the use of conflict to create the climax and drive the whole narrative of the story. The highlighted conflict is when Khalil is shot. Once Khalil was shot, the rest of the novel was largely based around this event, and it sets up the rest of the novel. Conflict can be small, like a fist fight between two characters, or in THUG, be a great technique to set up a story like Angie Thomas has achieved. Linking to the question, being in different gangs can sometimes hurt your reputation as, like in the novel, after officer 115 was shot, the police force tries to justify his actions but the majority of the community starts rioting and causing havoc as a result of what the officers have done. So the reputation of the gang you are involved in and what they have done can change the way people see the group and the preconceived notions that would come with it if you were involved with
