In today’s society, many people tend to mischaracterize and stereotype the Puritans with the modern sexual attitudes. The Puritans realized that sex is apart of everyone’s natural behavior, however, they believed that during marriage was the only proper time for it. There was only one main limit placed upon sex in marriage, and that was that it couldn’t interfere with your state religion and relationship with God. The leaders of the Puritans put very harsh punishments on adultery because they realized that people were going to engage in sexual acts regardless if they were married or not. A number of people in the group respected the law, and didn’t engage in sex because they weren’t married to anyone.

General knowledge of monks suggest that they are meant to live a simple life, studying in their cloisters and devoting their time to public service and work, however we see the exact opposite from the monk in the story. Rather than fulfilling his duties as a monk, the story mentions his love for hunting hares with the greyhounds he owns, and riding his horse (Acosta). Chaucer also notes his robes, which are meant to be plain are instead covered “with fur of grey, the finest of the land”, which further separates this character from the conventional monk (Chaucer 194). With all aspects considered, the Monk is not outright a terrible person; in a reader’s eyes we can infer that he became one due to the order and environment it brings (Acosta). Chaucer’s use of satire in this paragraph is very effective, because it highlights the sharp contrast between the Monk’s description in the prologue and the usual behavior and code of morals exemplified by actual monks without actually mentioning Chaucer’s own thoughts and opinions, at the same time serving to poking fun at how different this man

In his Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer depicts students in two ways, he shows us two social stereotypes of students: firstly as very serious, and secondly as rogues and womanizers.
The first poor plan that the Friar partook in was marrying Romeo and Juliet. If he did not marry them, then all the tragedies could have been avoided. Marriage creates a strong bond between two people that is almost unbreakable. The second fault that he made was when he created the risky plan to fake Juliet’s death.
