The 1920’s was a time of new modern age. The economy of automobiles was born, the entertainment world blossomed and women had discovered new found freedom. The 1920’s definitely deserved the name of the ‘roaring twenties’. Automobiles became an important consumer product.
Although a lot of people experienced economic growth, some did not share it. Farmers, railroaders, and textile factories did not share this. The 20’s were called the “roaring twenties”, because there were several societal changes occurring. New styles, habits, ways of thinking, and most importantly, the new opportunities for women. Thanks to the flappers, a group of women wanting equality, women were able to vote, work outside the home, and run for political office.
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear of the 1920s are flappers. I picture the women with bobbed hair, shorter flowy dresses exposing skin, galoshes, and cigarettes. Not only did women begin to dress and look a certain way, they began to behave differently as well. Throughout history, women were deemed to be inferior to men, and were treated as such. Society expected women to take on the role of a homemaker.
The New Modern Era of 1920s When people think of the 1920's, the phrase "The Roaring Twenties" usually comes to mind. It was a time when more people lived in the cities than on farms (Hoover). A time where the role women had on society took a huge turn for the better. The image of the flapper came to life as it portrayed how the young woman was seen across the nation. Some issues that women had in the 1920's are related to some of the issues women have today.
During the 1920’s, brought many changes to American culture. Woman dressed and acted differently. Woman who wore short skirts, drank, smoked, and did unladylike things were called flappers. Woman gained the freedom to vote with the 19th Amendment being added to the Constitution in 1920. There was access to credit and people would buy things with money
The Roaring Twenties The 1920’s were an era of time that people struggled in. It had ups, and it definitely had downs. This was an age of social change, and it consisted of many ideas and events. Many refer to this decade as the “Roaring Twenties”.
The Roaring Twenties, characterized as a progressive era toward changes and advances, it was a start for freedom and independence for women. Women gained political power by gaining the right to vote. They changed their traditional way to be, way to act and dress to gain respect, and the liberty of independence. Society had different ways of ideals and the ways women were willing to do were disapproved of, and it was wrong for lots of different people, including women from the older generation. In the 1920’s women went through a lot of changes that made them a free spirit, changes that made them what they are now and having the liberty of being independent.
The Roaring Twenties arose with new trends, new technology, and a new morality. With wars finally and completely over, it was time for Americans to have some fun and let all the tension go. The women were able to free some of their restrictions with the ability to drink, vote, and have their own reputation. Also, Americans released the stress through using new technology, such as cars, airplanes, and radios. The Twenties finished with a screeching halt as the growth in the economy collapsed and the Great Depression into the next decade.
Maybe people care a lot about what other people think; or, maybe they just do not care at all. Some people live by what other people want or think is “normal.” Other people live the way they want to live and do not care about the things other people want them to be. Women tend to struggle with this alot. Stereotypes, inequalities, and politics were not things women in the 1930s wanted to live by; although, they managed to make it better for themselves through political action over time.
According to the one and only Zelda FItzgerald, "All I want to be is very young always and very irresponsible and to feel that my life is my own-to live and be happy and die in my own way to please myself". Life changed drastically for women in the 1920s. World War 1 caused women to be needed in the workforce while the men were fighting in battle, there had to be an employee to work the farm and the production line. Due to the need for more women in the workforce, the role of women in the 1920’s changed. Because of the years that men spent in war and the new coming right for women to vote, the female population of the 1920’s set a trend known as “flappers”.

These developments created new changes and helped shape the ways of life of the American people. Women played a significant example in social changes. From improvements in the education system, to minor developments such as the changes in attire. Another major development was economic production.
The twenties were often referred to as the roaring twenties due to the fast-paced lifestyle. America’s economy was booming, and hundreds of new job opportunities were available. During the era, many ignored prohibition, and enjoyed the benefits of drinking, dancing, and singing. Throughout the 1920’s, new fashion allowed women to experiment with unique clothing styles, experience a change in social status, and promoted an increase of creativity.
Despite this, women were able to make a huge impact on America through social reforms. Many young women went against the beliefs of their parents. Prior to the Roaring Twenties, America was in a Victorian era. Women wore dresses that were floor-length, their hair was long and premarital sex was almost non-existent. During the 1920’s however, some women became what are known as “flappers”.
The 1920’s was a time of dramatic change: Culturally people were changing, Music and Broadway were becoming highly popular. Dancing and Speakeasies were the “It” thing to do and women started becoming more independent.
