For quarter one, I went on a virtual field trip to the Sterling Weather Center. I experienced reading about how the forecasters forecast weather and the vast amount of tools they use. I read about what all the tools did and why it was important to use all the different tools. I also discovered what was so important and special about all of the weather tools. There are 122 field offices that are used to collect data for the weather. This trip was very interesting because weather is a fascinating topic to me. I love learning about how we track weather and can predict future weather patterns. The Sterling Weather Center covers 44 counties in Maryland, northern Virginia, eastern West Virginia and District of Columbia with the city of Baltimore. That is a lot of area. The Weather Center has computer models to show all of the high and low pressures and weather satellites to watch the weather around our area. The air pressure is measured with a barometer. Air pressure’s definition is the force per unit of area exerted on the Earth’s surface by the weight of the air above the surface. This means that the force that is given off creates molecules that make it up and makes up its size, motion, and number present in the air. Weather is not all about air pressure. Weather is also about the Moon’s gravitational pull on Earth. This pull changes tides in the ocean from low tides to high tides making tsunamis and other wave related disasters. Weather is also about fronts, warm and cold fronts to be exact. When a warm and cold front hit each other, they create a very problematic natural disaster called a tornado. A tornado is a big tunnel like wind cloud that touches the ground and normally touches down in places that have very flat ground. History And Importance Of The Related
