“Still life with Flowers in a Glass Vase”
Description
The piece is a still- life painting of flowers in a glass vase on a stone sheet It was painted by Jan Davidz De Heem in 1650. In the piece, I see multiple brightly coloured flowers in a bouquet, some are standing up straight and some are wilted and falling. Each flower is bright, and their colours make them pop, there is red, white, pink, brown, blue and green. I think that there are some roses, trosnarcis, dormers, tulips and honeysuckles with some strands of wheat. Each flower is extremely detailed and looks 3D. There are also some animals, a butterfly, a caterpillar, beetles, ants and other insects such as spiders and a snail. Jan Davidz De Heem has used watercolour, oil …show more content…

Analysis
Jan Davidz De Heems use of bright colours really brightens up the piece and gives it a happy feeling. The colours used are naturally vivid such as blues, reds, yellows and are really intense so they make the flowers stand out against the plain black background. There are no dull colours used and are all light colours, however, some parts of the flowers or stems are dark colours to add form, definition and detail. Jan Davidz De Heem uses his space very well, there are positive spaces as he has used up most of the space with flowers and stems. Each flower has its own unique shape and space so no two flowers look alike. There are very few negative spaces where he has not painted anything but I find that it looks good this way as it is not too crowded. The black background helps the flowers stand out, so if there was more flowers or things drawn onto those parts, the focus on the bright flowers
