For a select number of fortunate athletes, that dream becomes a reality when they commit to a school and sign their letter of intent. But are they really fortunate? College athletics are oftentimes not as glamorous as one would think. The transition to college is not a walk in the park, but add a rigorous summer conditioning program, two-a-days everyday, and the pressures of coaches you have yet to impress, and you have a recipe for disaster.

In this paper I will be interviewing the athletic director of West Chester B. Reed Henderson High School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. I chose to interview the athletic director because he is my father, Ken McCormick, and one of the main reasons that I would like to go into administration. Cowley has six boys’ sports teams and seven girls’ sports teams. Cowley boy’s baseball team just had a great season with a 54-5 record and have always been a power house and a top contender in the nation. The girls’ basketball and the girls volleyball team has always been good and always exciting to see both teams play. A lot of sports recruits come from the inner city, country or a humble environment. Going to college is a completely new and different experience. A large portion of players are trying to adjust in the classroom and feel inferior in more ways than we care to realize. Many of the students at major universities in the United States typically come from families that have incomes that are above the national average. These players are asked to come to the college’s where they are not socially equal but they are expected to feel good about the situation and themselves.
The Union County Vocational Technical Schools (UCVTS) should have a sports program for students to join. Some students turn down the opportunity to come to UCVTS because no sports opportunities are available. Not many extracurricular activities are available besides clubs on campus. Also, students who attend UCVTS and play sports for their local hometown school can’t enjoy the same school spirt from a hard fought victory as the students who attend the hometown school. Students should play for the school they attend.
Yet, the term “student athlete” seems to always hold these talks back. Coed Teams Benefit Both Male and Female Participants “An active participation in sports has a positive influence on a teenager’s social life, self-esteem and even academic performance (Sitkowski, 2008). ’’ Sports are an excellent means of spending one’s leisure. Sports are all types of typically competitive physical movement or game which, through organized participation, intend to improve physical skills, strengthen the body and give enjoyment to members.
Kids every day, of all ages play sports, whether it be a fun game with their friends or organized through their school. Sports themselves are great, they promote countless benefits and encourage players. However, once schools get involved things change. Amanda Ripley in her article The Case against High School Sports states “In many schools, sports are so entrenched that no one- not even the people in charge- relizes their actual cost.” The academic focus of schools can shift to the athletics, with there being too much time and money being poured in it.
If society stops to understand the struggles these women have been facing for decades will have a clearer picture of what steps to take in order to make a change in the sports industry. Men need to put their masculinity aside and advocate giving women a voice. The purpose of this paper is to explore the issues women in the sport world have faced through history, wage gaps, current issues today, and to discuss findings and recommendations for future research. Title IX is a law that came into effect in 1972, this comprehensive federal law prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity.
