The History of Raves
As time goes by, generations start new trends and people are always finding new ways to express themselves, raving is definitely one of these. As new music started to be created such as dubstep, house music, and techno the term EDM (electronic dance music) emerged. EDM music was the start to what we now know as music festival raves that are held all over the world.
So what exactly is a rave? Well the definition of a rave is an all-night dance party filled with electronic dance music such as techno, trance, dubstep, drum and bass (Simms). Today thousands of people attend raves every year, some experiencing them for their first time and others dedicated ravers who attend regularly.

Most of this credit is given to Frankie Bones who was a DJ. He helped organize some of the earliest raves in the US after attending underground raves in the UK. He started a series of raves in New York City called Storm Raves, which had a consistent audience (Simms). He also created PLUR which is a big part of rave community today. During the 1990’s the biggest rave promotional group was Global Underworld Network, they organized the NARNIA and OPIUM festivals, these festivals would draw in more than 60,000 people. Narnia was featured on MTV and twice on Life Magazine as well as honored as the Event of the Year in 1995 (Simms). Meanwhile in the San Francisco area underground raves were starting to take off, there was no curfews here so attendance would be of up to 20,000 people. By 1991 raves were a big hit in this area and flyers could be found all around, most raves were thrown in venues but open air raves were happening at this time as well. USC organizes raves throughout the year in the Seattle area. USC was started by Chad Anderson in 1996. The most popular rave they put on is the EDM festival Paradiso which is done in the summer at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington. This festival is a 2 day event that gets more than 20,000 people in attendance (Stout). The event has a zero drug tolerance and ticketholders must be at least 18 years old. USC also puts on lucky for St. Patrick’s Day, Resolution for New Year ’s Eve, and freak night for Halloween, all these are a one day event that are usually held in the Tacoma Dome.
