Kate Chopin states, “But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.” (Chopin 23) This quote explains the feelings that are starting to stir in Louise’s brain. The short story “The Story of an Hour” all of the events take place in an hour. Mr. Mallard is supposedly reported dead after a railroad accident happened, Richard and Josephine explain to Louise that her husband has passed away. At first when they told Mrs. Mallard that her husband was dead, she grieved and was sad then she realizes that she is how an independent, free woman. Brently Mallard walks through the front door. Then passes away from what the doctors believe was from the joy of her husband walking through the door. Chopin states, “There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable roomy armchair.” (Chopin 22) This quote contains imagery of how she sat in the armchair and stared outside the open window, also the readers can gather from the quote that she is allowing the fact that her husband is actually dead to sink in. The open window is a symbol of freedom, as she sits there staring out the window she is thinking about how independent of a woman she is, even though she has not expressed that information yet.
