Kate Chopin is an American writer in the end of 19th century, and she wrote lots of short stories and novels which deal with women’s concern from their viewpoints. She often describes a woman’s inner voice very realistically indeed, and it is also focused on a widow’s conflict in one of her works, “The Story of an Hour.” In this story, there are some symbols to grasp the author’s intentions. This paper will argue that “spring” and “door” are important symbols in “The Story of an Hour.”
Firstly, in this story, “spring” is a symbol of freedom. This symbol is the clue to consider what freedom is. This story changes completely in this passage; “She could see in the open square before her house the top of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life” (Chopin).
