“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is a story about a newly widowed woman with heart disease, heart disease that could kill her if she got too wound up, meaning too happy, sad, etc. In the beginning, she acted as any newly widowed wife would; she was extremely sad; word was her husband passed in a train accident. Later, she realized that her husband dying was one of the best things that happened to her. She was finally free from his shadow. Once she realized that her life was going to be great without him, he reappeared and she died from her heart disease. The conflict in this story was that the widow became shocked as her inner feelings were released about the death of her husband, she was happy and overjoyed that her husband passed because she was always stuck in her husband shadow. The shock was that she was actually happy and relieved that her husband passed. The appearance of her husband overwhelmed her and she ended up passing out and dying of an overwhelming feeling of joy and shock. She could now follow her dreams and pursue whatever she has wanted to do with her life. Though her happiness was short-lived because her husband reappeared alive and well, she was still able to at least imagine what her life would be like free from her husband’s shadow. Seeing him alive overwhelmed her. Another part of the conflict was that when she even got word that her husband was dead, she wasn’t sad or upset about it; even though it was only for a few short-lived moments. The story was narrated through the “widows” mind. It was an emotional rollercoaster in her mind.
