The Story of an Hour was written by Kate Chopin. This story is about an event which happen to Mrs. Mallard for an hour as its name suggests. She has a heart trouble and was told about her husband’ death from other people. There are two important symbols in the story. It is “truth” and “death”. These symbols play an important part and help us understand the story. I will write about it . At first, I will explain about “truth”. We can guess that “truth” means two things. One is “truth” that Mrs. Mallard’s husband is alive. Until then, she experienced joy that was released from him. We can read from a sentence, “‘free! Body and soul free!’ she kept whispering.” The other is Mrs. Mallard’s love to him. As an evidence of it, I can give from the story. “she had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not.” Mrs. Mallard had not often loved him. Then she thought that she could get freedom when she did not know he is alive. As mentioned above, Mrs. Mallard got freedom by her husband’s death but she died. So, she could not get freedom by her own death. She seemed to be brought happiness by “death” but she was deprived of her freedom by “death”. Thus, “death” in the story is related freedom of women.
