In the short story of “The story of an Hour”Kate Chopin wrote a story about a lady who had heart trouble and found out that her husband died.She grieved over him but found a new light at the end of the tunnel. She felt independent and free.Then suddenly her husband walks in the room and she realizes he is alive. Moments after that she dies after finding out about her husband did not die. Kate Chopin uses many different elements to make her story come to life.She uses imagery, similes. Repetition, tone shifts, and the atmosphere of the scene. The setting starts with word such as “a comfortable room”, facing the window where the treetops are”, to show that is where the main character is with her sister Josephine.The story takes place in present tense, with an unknown narrator reading the story in third person. It is an unknown narrator because there is no I’s in the story to indicate that it could of been ms. Mallard. But it as well could not be Mrs. Mallard’s sister or husband because they do not say wife, sister, we,or they. The story starts off by describing and discussing problems with the main character Mrs.Mallard. Mallard’s sister Josephine to reveal that her husband has suffered a railroad crashed and has passed away. In the story Kate Chopin uses a simile to describe Mrs.Mallard’s feelings like “ except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dream,” to make her feelings more real to the loss of her husband. Right before the climax of the the story happens Kate Chopin makes a suspense to the story by stating “there was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully.” To show the mood shift in the story from grief of her lost husband to feeling something but not just realizing it
