Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

There are many differences and similarities between chapter 14 of the Jungle and a Fable for Tomorrow. The main differences and similarities discussed in this essay are the the rhetorical devices used such as the ethos, pathos, and logos. One way that both of these stories are similar is that they are both works of fiction. Despite the fact that the jungle is somewhat based on true scenarios and environments the main story and characters are fictitious.

The novel takes place during the French Revolution, a period of social and political upheaval in France and England. While peasants died in the streets from hunger, aristocrats had more money and power than they knew what to do with. A Tale of Two Cities describes, in detail, the poverty of the time period, as well as the struggle of a people able to overcome oppression. The novel is largely based off of occurrences Dickens experienced during his childhood.

Meaning that emotions have a stronger power to influence the mind on how one perceives something. This is represented in her statement of “Revealing her own dynamic and avant-garde understanding, Chopin rejects the tradition of attributing supremacy to the faculty of reason in the act of perception, and she attributes it instead to the faculty of emotions. ”(215)
In the short story The Story of an Hour written by Kate, Chopin uses diction to portray the newfound freedom of the heroine. The moment she overcomes her grief over her husband's death, she notices something too subtle and elusive to name. She feels freedom and realizes that her husband's passing opens up her own life. During her grief, she recognized something possessed her. As she abandoned herself she whispered, "Free, Free, Free! (10).
The writings of Kate Chopin and Willa Cather can lead readers to interpret that the lives of women in the late 1800s were very unfulfilling, given the restricting Victorian ideals they were expected to follow. For example, in Chopin’s story “A Pair of Silk Stockings”, it is stated that “The needs of the present absorbed her (Mrs. Sommers) every faculty. A vision of the future like some dim, gaunt monster sometimes appalled her, but luckily tomorrow never comes” (505). Mrs. Sommers never seems to have time to think about her own desires and aspirations; so when given the opportunity, she binges to temporarily fulfill this. By writing this, Chopin wants the readers to infer that the daily tasks of the average woman in the 1800s, were a huge barricade
In “The Story of An Hour”, Kate Chopin uses principally imagery. In fact, the text is written with an ironic tone; what is described as the mourning of Mrs. Mallard for her husband is really a celebration of what she believes is the beginning of a new era, an era of freedom. Irony is used here to describe the expectations of the society towards mourning women, and what some women in such events like the death of the husband think. In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the emphasis is on the characters; it is easy to notice that the character talking to the girl, and telling her what to do or not to do, and how to behave, is a parental figure. Since this character refers to the girl’s father, we can form the hypothesis that it is the girl’s mother.

The story is short, comprised of a progression of short sections, a large number of which comprise of only a few sentences. Moreover, the story covers just a single hour in Louise Mallard's life from the minute she learns of her better half's passing to the minute he out of the blue returns alive. The short, thick structure reflects the exceptional hour Louise spends thinking about her new freedom.

In chapter ten of The Outsiders, Ponyboy is as expected takes the death of Johnny and Dally extremely poorly. He cannot understand how he lost his friends so quickly and he does not know how to process all of it. Since Ponyboy is unable to accept their death he tells himself that they are not dead in order to cope with what has happened (Hinton, 2006, p. 150). Overall, too much has happened so quickly that he emotionally and mentally cannot think about the death of his friends, therefore, he perceives them as still being alive. During the 1890’s until today, the roles of women and their rights have severely changed. They have been inferior, submissive, and trapped by their marriage. Women have slowly evolved into individuals that have rights and can represent “feminine individuality”. The fact that they be intended to be house-caring women has changed.
Women in the 1890s were expected to work at home to keep their husbands comfortable and bear him children. Kate Chopin wrote most of her short stories during this time period. Her stories “A Respectable Woman” and “A Story of an Hour” show a female protagonist who want their freedom and control over their own lives. Her characters pushed the bounds of the roles that society gave them and showed the brutal reality of how women were treated in the 1890s. In “A Respectable Woman” the female protagonist Mrs. Baroda is married and lives on a plantation with her husband, who invites a friend to spend a week or two with them.
