Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

In the short story The Story of an Hour written by Kate, Chopin uses diction to portray the newfound freedom of the heroine. The moment she overcomes her grief over her husband's death, she notices something too subtle and elusive to name. She feels freedom and realizes that her husband's passing opens up her own life. During her grief, she recognized something possessed her. As she abandoned herself she whispered, "Free, Free, Free! (10).

In “The Story of An Hour”, Kate Chopin uses principally imagery. In fact, the text is written with an ironic tone; what is described as the mourning of Mrs. Mallard for her husband is really a celebration of what she believes is the beginning of a new era, an era of freedom. Irony is used here to describe the expectations of the society towards mourning women, and what some women in such events like the death of the husband think. In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the emphasis is on the characters; it is easy to notice that the character talking to the girl, and telling her what to do or not to do, and how to behave, is a parental figure. Since this character refers to the girl’s father, we can form the hypothesis that it is the girl’s mother.

Her stories “A Respectable Woman” and “A Story of an Hour” show a female protagonist who want their freedom and control over their own lives. Her characters pushed the bounds of the roles that society gave them and showed the brutal reality of how women were treated in the 1890s. In “A Respectable Woman” the female protagonist Mrs. Baroda is married and lives on a plantation with her husband, who invites a friend to spend a week or two with them.
