Rhetorical Analysis of Remember the Titans In the movie Remember the Titans, Coach Boone states, that his players need to be unified together as a team, instead of being separated because of the color of their skin. He does this by using allusion, diction, and a rhetorical question. Boone uses a rhetorical question in line one when he states, “Anybody know what this place is?”
In “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, the author uses diction like abstract diction and details by explaining what he exactly wants in life to demonstrate Walter and his dream. To begin, Hansberry uses diction to demonstrate Walter and his dream by using abstract diction. She does this by explaining how he will give Travis anything for his seventeenth birthday and that he will “hand you the world!” (2.2). This shows that he wants to make his sons life as good as possible.
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
In “The Biggest Loser” (October 23, 2015), Paul Krugman asserts that the Benghazi committee is a witch hunt and that ¨Trey Gowdy and company” are chumps. Mr. Krugman illustrates his displeasure with the committee and the head of it, Trey Gowdy, through belittling diction and Rhetorical question. He uses this choice in diction and rhetorical question in order to deter anyone from taking the accusations of the committee seriously by calling not only the committee “chumps” and but anyone who listens to the committee an ¨ even bigger chump” then the committee is. Krugman appeals to his more liberal audience by talking about the committee, and its tea party support, with a tone of contempt by using insulting diction like “loser” and “chump”.
Corresponding ideas and uses of rhetorical devices can bridge together multiple stories. The themes of interdependence on other human beings and essentials of life are shown throughout the novels “102 Minutes” by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn, and “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer. One may think that these pieces have nothing in common, but in order to interpret the overlying ideas, readers must look deeper than the main ideas of each book to figure out how they develop upon one another. The stories “Into the Wild,” and “102 Minutes” both use a plentiful amount of overarching viewpoints and many of the same tools of rhetoric, such as word choice, delivery and style to help expand and make connections between novels. It follows the story of Meursault, an indifferent French Algerian, and his actions leading to his eventual death. Camus, a French philosopher, author, and journalist most notably renowned for his philosophy of absurdism, distributes a recurring theme of existentialism and absurdism throughout the novel, and heavily does so in passages that serve the most significance to the story.
Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
In Kurzweil’s The Age of Spiritual Machines, one of his main arguments is that one day, in the near future, artificial intelligence will exceed the intelligence of humans. He predicts this largely on the idea of the intelligence of evolution. It took evolution millions of years to make the human being that we are today and it only took humans a few thousand years to create technology. Since you are considered smarted if you are able to do something faster, humans are smarter then our creator, evolution.
Good Morning Mr. Sale, I know that you are working to find a good niche for me, but I thought it might be useful to put in writing some ways that I think can serve the students of Swain County. AP USH. I would like to continue teaching AP for a few more years until I can mentor someone to take over the program. I believe that AP provides a valuable opportunity for our students to learn academic skills that will help them succeed in college, but more importantly, I think it helps them hone their “grit” skills. They often realize they can achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Furthermore, Adichie incorporates the use of rhetorical devices such as brief, powerful sentences, rhetorical questions, purposeful repetition, and alliteration to further support her ideas. What I believe to be her most powerful sentence is when she states that “Stories matter” (5). This brief sentence is significant because it makes the audience pause and think. This sentence takes us back to Adichie saying that single stories create stereotypes, therefore the stories that are told are important. Secondly, the rhetorical questions she asks the audience are the “what if’s”.
A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, surrounds the cities of Paris and London during the late 1700’s. The novel takes place during the French Revolution, a period of social and political upheaval in France and England. While peasants died in the streets from hunger, aristocrats had more money and power than they knew what to do with. A Tale of Two Cities describes, in detail, the poverty of the time period, as well as the struggle of a people able to overcome oppression. The novel is largely based off of occurrences Dickens experienced during his childhood.
Reading and writing reflection Reading and writing has had one of the greatest roles in my life,and has made me the person I am today. If I was not able to read or write,my life would be very difficult,school would be very Challenging ,and I would not be able to figure out anything out by myself and for myself. Although I love to read and write,writing not as much,I find some parts very difficult to fully understand. Fully analyzing the text is something i always have trouble with. When I am asked to analyze texts and find rhetorical appeals,I sometimes struggle because I don’t fully understand the story and I do not fully understand some appeals,such as ethos.
Often known as the Father of American Literature to many educated individuals, Ralph Waldo Emerson in his oration “The American Scholar” brilliantly provides a sublime example of how Emerson earned his title through the appliance of diction, syntax, allusions, and many other rhetorical devices and strategies. Often times, when a car crash appears to have occurred, entire freeways and roads will be backed up, not due to obstructions in the road but simply from all of the drivers slowing down to view the destruction. Situations similar to this are often referred to as a train wreck, something terrible that has happened but for some reason gives the urge for people to watch. There is something psychologically intriguing about it and this fascination with the abomination is no new concept. The 1899 novel Heart of Darkness explores this very idea of an intense fascination of gore and savagery within its text.
