Why did the Framers of the United States ultimately decide to give more power to the Federal Government rather than the state governments? There were many problems and weaknesses with the Articles of Confederation. Some of the weaknesses was that congress did not have the power to tax, couldn’t regulate trade between the states or foreign countries. They had no National court system, the articles could not be amended without the commitment of all 13 colonies. Despite all the problems and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation there were some good things about it or “strengths”, like it created the first official government of the United States, and the state had no authority to tax or regulate state-to-state trade.
eorge Washington's response to the Whiskey Rebellion showed that the Constitution had fixed the issues that the Articles of Confederation had. The articles of confederation had many problems. One problem was that the states had more power than Congress had. This was a problem because Congress couldn't enforce the states to pay taxes, and Congress could not draft an army which left Congress not knowing if they had an army if they went into war.
Although the Articles of Confederation served a great purpose and had numerous advantages and strengths, it also contained many weaknesses with some flaws. One of the weaknesses is that this agreement could not enforce laws or have the power to tax the people of the colony. Along with this, the government could also not allow each of he states to continue to follow those laws. There was also no national army or navy, no national courts, no solid leadership or power in a position to take charge, and there was only one vote for each state no matter what the size of the state is. The main reason Americans wanted to construct a weak national government was to prevent the them from gaining too much power and allowing the government to eventually
The Articles of Confederation were not the ideal set of laws that the founding fathers intended. They had their flaws, but they also contain a few laws that fixed some current problems of the country. The problems that faced the new nation were, the need for unification and preservation of this unification of the states, the rules emplaced on expansion and settlement of western lands, and it set up a economy, that was vital to the country. The states had just won the revolutionary war by coming together to fight the British, and the Articles of Confederation made sure that this unification was official and permanent.
The Revolutionary War had ended and the colonies successfully signed a treaty of paris with England, proclaiming their independence from Britain and establishing other terms of the treaty. No longer were the colonies divided, they had now become the United States of America and consisted of states. Throughout the colonists' "road to recovery" from Britain, and their journey to becoming a successful and powerful nation, they were faced with numerous challenges including one large one - creating a country! They needed to establish a strong but restricted central government, create a set of fair rules, laws, and regulations, and elect political leaders to represent each state and the nation as a whole, thus, the Articles of Confederation
Articles of Confederation America was suffering from its debts and had trouble competing economically. The articles of confederation already limited what the Congress could do. Most of the powers were given to the states and limited what the Congress was able to do. Each state had its own goal and policies on imports and exports that made each state very different making it more difficult to regulate trade. The only place that the Congress could regulate trade was the natives, and when the Congress wants to trade with foreign countries they can’t because Congress didn’t have any negotiation trade agreements due to the limitation of the articles of confederation.
The Article of Confederation was created in 1776, after the American revolution. In 1787 The Articles of Confederation was re-written during The Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. The reason for rewriting it was because of it being a weak central government. No one person was allowed all the power in fear of being like the British. The Congress at the time was made up of one delegate from the thirteen states.
The Thirteen Colonies had now been free for a while and had grown into a nation with an abundance of land with a strong sense of responsibility. The United States of America was not like the other nations found throughout the world. It differed though its principals and morals, it radiated a sense of comfort and freedom that was hard to find anywhere else. However, it still lacked a strong government that could support such an important and developing nation. The Articles of Confederation had its achievements that supported it; however, it also had its great shortcomings that made the nation doubt its support to the large nation.
The Articles of Confederation strengths were democratic and state dominated, and its weakness was that the federal government had no power to tax and it couldn’t unify the states constitutionally by laws. The strengths of the Articles are few. The government under the Articles of Confederation successfully waged a war for independence against Britain. Additionally, the Articles also allowed states to dominate their own states, such as taxing, regulating the trade and economy, etc. However, under the Articles of Confederation, there was no chief executive, there was no court system, there was not even a way for the central government to force the states to pay tax.
As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.
All of the issues in the Articles of Confederation were resolved in the Constitution. For example, under the Articles of Confederation, Congress had zero power to tax, regulate trade between the states or enforce laws. This problem was fixed in the Constitution because it had the U. S ruled by a strong central government that could tax, regulate trade and enforce laws. The Articles of Confederation also had many weaknesses like having no national army or currency. This was fixed by the Constitution because now, there is a national army and a national currency (dollars).
The “search for national government” in Brinkley (2011) is broken down into five sections. The five sections are as follows The Confederation, Diplomatic Failures, The Confederation and the Northwest, Indians and the Western Lands, and finally Debts, Taxes, and Daniel Shays. In addition to discussing each section I will outline the successes and failures of the Articles of Confederation. After fighting a war with an overly restrictive and powerful federal government in the English monarchy America wanted the complete opposite from its own federal government.
In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The Articles of Confederation had many problems like, the poor international trade, poor foreign relations and a weak economy in contrast to the Constitution that only had one problem, the struggle over the ratification. the Articles of Confederation achieved the Northwest Ordinance and the Northwest Territory and according to a history website, the Constitution achieved that we had a system of checks and balances, that we had a bill of rights, and, eventually, the survival of a bloody civil war intact. Lastly, the Constitution had three compromises: the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Slave Trade compromise.
