The Salem witch trials that took place in colonial Massachusetts led to a death toll of 20 people, 19 hanged and one pressed by stones. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft, or as some Puritans called it “the Devil’s magic.” In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, a play based on true events, talks about the Salem witch trials, and who was accused and was executed. Although 20 people from the trials were executed effectively, within reason, only two individuals from The Crucible deserve to be pardoned from the crime of witchcraft, John Proctor and Giles Corey. The Devil had infiltrated the small town of Salem, Massachusetts and it was up to the townspeople to get to the bottom of it. During the Salem witch trials, the town was surrounded by hysteria and panic. At a vulnerable state, many people let others take advantage of them and blindly trusted anyone who had an inkling about the Devil among the town. The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, highlights these gullible and panicked people by showing how others rose to power at this time. Girls like Abigail Williams were trusted on who to blame for witchcraft while others like John Hale were pushed to the side and silenced for questioning the reliability of these blind accusations.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a novel that describes events that happened in Salem, Massachusetts 1962, these events were called the Salem witch trials. Two important people in the story were John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor, they were farmers that lived on the outskirts of the town, and they lived with their three sons and their servant Mary Warren. The Puritans, known for turning to God when given any matter at hand, lay blame on the Devil, regardless of their contradictory values. By blaming on him for their wrongdoings, the Devil earns power through the Puritans restoring to involve him whenever any one thing goes wrong. Power is defined by one’s reputation, status, wealth, gender, and age; although the natural deciding factor of one’s power in the Puritan society is land, the Devil himself holds ultimate power. Despite the fact that he does not appear as a human figure, he controls the thoughts and actions of the Puritan society, serving as the ultimate threat.
The Salem witch trials were a time period when any individual could be accused of witchcraft for numerous reasons. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller focuses on the deviation of the trials and how the town’s most religious and honest members of the community are tried with witchcraft. John Proctor, the town’s most honest man, is accused of being a witch and must decide if he should confess or not. Proctor’s confession will stop the town from rebelling and uphold the reputations of Deputy Governor Danforth and Reverend Parris. Hale also wishes for Proctor’s confession so he does not have to feel responsible if Proctor were to be hanged for his witchcraft accusations.
We often, as people, look back on the past and think that stuff like that doesn’t happen now. That is not the case though, there are many similarities between the past and the world we live in now. While the environment and technology may change and be different the people don’t. One of these past situations is the Salem Witch Trials. We often look back on the decisions made by people in this time and say nothing like that would ever happen.

Argumentative Essay: The Crucible John Proctor was a strong-loved man. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in the 1950s to compare the events happening in The Crucible to the real Red Scare. In The Crucible, I believe John Proctor could have ended the mass hysteria in Salem by telling the truth about his sins sooner. He could have never gotten close to Abigail and had a stronger voice against the accusations. John Proctor could have ended the mass hysteria in many ways.
