Love is difficult to find, but is even more difficult when you have no love. “The only thing more difficult than the crucifixion of love is the crucifixion of no love (Livatino).” To have no love is an unending loneliness and a void you can’t fill yourself. It’s almost as if a piece of you is missing and can only be filled by another. For me, I believe this is the goal of humans: to find love and to be loved.
The definition of love, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is a strong affection for another arising out of personal ties (Merriam). It’s what drives our feelings and is sometimes what we call following our heart, even though our heart is only a muscle. What makes people friends is their play of emotions: what they like, who they like, and who they are as a person. These are the key items that make up a person’s personality. Personality is key in if people work well with each other or not. It is also one of the main factors of a working relationship. Whether someone is more beautiful than another can be a decision to date that gorgeous person rather than if you get along with their emotions and personality. This was the case for Aziz Ansari’s parents. “The first girl, he said, was “a little too tall,” and the second girl was, “a little too short.” Then he met my mom. He quickly deduced that she was the appropriate height (finally!), and they talked for about 30 minutes...A week later, they were married (Ansari).” His father literally based his marriage on height, a physical attribution. And through marriage, he would learn to love her for more than just her looks. To love is also a part of a chemical bond. The way others smell to us can be a factor to whether or not we want to be with said person. Fun fact: deodorant actually ruins our chance of finding the best suited partner because we can’t smell their original scent, which is our body’s way of finding love. Chemicals play more of a role in love than people think. It makes our body react to others by releasing dopamine, the feel-good chemical, when seeing the ones we love.
