Following a leader is a decision that many people face at various points in their lives. Whether it is a decision to join a political movement, support a sports team, or follow a religious figure; people are often drawn to leaders who can inspire and motivate them. Additionally, the leader's personal qualities, such as charisma and confidence, can also play a role in their ability to attract followers. A strong leader can inspire and motivate people to achieve a common goal, and can also provide a sense of security and stability. The rulers of Oedipus, the King, Antigone, and Constantinople all demonstrate the strengths a ruler must possess for his people to follow them. The people of Thebes felt threatened by the Sphinx, and when they saw Oedipus solve its riddle, they believed that he could be one of their necessities: security and peace. These essentials convinced them that more prosperous goods were to come from him that would benefit their lifestyle. In addition, the titular character is determined to solve the mystery of who killed the previous king, Laius by taking excessive measures. Oedipus’ determination and leadership to find the murderer of Laius proved how much he would sacrifice so his people were safe and the criminal was rightfully punished. The people of Thebes chose to follow Oedipus because he was a skilled leader who could take action and make difficult decisions. When a king is prideful of his nation and seeks peace and justice, it allows the people to trust them. It motivates them to seek a better society with higher security and higher prosperity.
