The methods for measuring and reporting crime are essential not only for law enforcement but also for the general public. The three forms of reporting methods are UCR, NIBRS, and NCVS. These reports can show us whether the crime rates are dropping or continuing to grow. UCR is the Uniform Crime Report. This report serves to show a reliable group of criminal justice statistics for law enforcement. The UCR method is beneficial in some areas, but it has more weaknesses than strengths. Uniform Crime Report's strengths are the different categories of crimes it collects. A few of these categories consist of aggravated assault, robbery, drug offenses, DUIs, etc. It collects and analyzes data for eight Part I offenses. Anyone can access the UCR data which makes it great for the public to use. This report also provides resources that show hate crime statistics. The weakness and limitation that the UCR reporting method lacks are the data listed will only be the crimes that are reported to law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement agencies use this system in the U.S. NIBRS reports generate data from Local, State, and Federal agencies systems. While the UCR method only grouped reports into 8 categories, the NIBRS is grouped into 23 different crime categories. The strengths of having an Incident-Based system are all the offenses in an incident are counted in the data compared to the UCR reporting and only reporting what was reported to the law enforcement agency. This report has more detail on each individual crime reported. It has such a wide range of crimes that the report can provide and collect. This is a very powerful tool for law enforcement administrations. A weakness of this reporting method is how detailed it is, which makes it not user-friendly or easy to do in a timely manner due to all the detailed information that has to be put
