When walking around school campus, have you ever noticed the way people react when no one is looking? Or what about the people they gravitate towards and the decisions they make? These inferences you are making about them and what they are doing is the basic definition of sociology. “Sociology is the scientific study of human social behavior and human groups and how they change over time.”(Larkin, 2015, n.d., para. 1) From the eyes of a teenager, during school it is almost impossible not to notice the clicks of people that form over the years. In other words, many different groups work together to cause the bigger picture to function correctly. For example, the US Government wouldn’t be as strong if the judicial, legislative, and executive branches decided to stop working with each other to achieve a common goal to run this country. As a teenager and as an adult you are reminded to watch what you say and do around the people who look up to you, like children. As a kid, if you see your older sibling doing something, you would want to do it too. Whether it was just to show off or because you thought it was ok when sometimes it wasn’t. Pastor Mark Moore once asked a question during one of his sermons at church camp saying, “we as human beings are designed to conform, but the question is who will you conform to be?” (M. Moore, personal communication, June 3, 2016) This causes you to step back and look at society as a whole. Just like the phrase Monkey see monkey do, we as humans are born to learn. As an infant, you don’t come out of the womb speaking full fluid sentences and preforming learned skills such as walking, writing or reading. All of these skills are traits we pick up from the people around you who want to help you succeed. Even if we know it or not, it’s natural for people to pick up slang, mannerisms, and other fight or flight reactions from society and the world.
