As a student, I always knew that different people had different ways of studying information. I have found that I have never been one to believe that a person’s IQ is a measure of how brilliant they are in their academics. I always believed that for one to be a top student work hard and revise their work daily. After watching and listening to the clip by Douglas Barton about what top students do differently, I realized that I’m just plain lazy and lack motivation.
As a student in Milnerton High School for over four years, the method of study that I have been using is reading the textbook, writing notes (in point form) on what I have read and revising over the notes verbally. I would usually use this study method about a day or two before an exam or test. In grades eight and nine this study method worked well for me most of the time but as I progressed to grade 10 and especially (emphasis on especially) grade 11, I started to notice that it became increasingly difficult for me to use this study method the before an exam or test because the workload was way too much to grasp in one or two nights. In terms of studying for tests or exams instead of revising my work on a daily basis and asking for help on the work that I don’t understand, I would procrastinate, leave everything for the last minute, study the night before by trying to cram in as much information as I could and sleep for a few hours or sometimes not sleep at all just so that could cover the work that would be tested. In terms of completing assignments, I would also (most of the time) leave them for the last minute instead of completing the projects as soon as possible to get them out of the way.
