The incidence of child abuse and neglect has increased dramatically in the past 25 years; the statistics have risen over 130% since 1980 with 1993 being the first year since 1972 in which the number was less than the previous year. Neglect is a harsh thing to go through when you have no one on your side especially by the people that are supposed to help you find a loving and caring family. Foster Care workers aren’t caring and looking out for the children like they are supposed to so that’s where the neglect comes from and that’s why this paper is getting written. The Foster Care System in the United States is neglectful and unsafe for children because foster care workers aren’t screened correctly, the system is not monitored appropriately, foster care can negatively affect the mind of a child.

Substance abuse and addiction is an issue which has had a growing impact on society for decades. Millions in Canada each year suffer from addiction and even death with larger and larger percentages of the population finding it easier to gain access to illegal substances. Use of illegal substances will often lead to substance abuse and addiction. Addiction is very powerful as it can have strong adverse effects, rewiring the brain and destroying life in pursuit of a substance. Efforts have been made to combat this issue in Canada, with increased funding to law enforcement to combat illegal sale and possession of substances, however this problem continues and has no end in sight.

One of, if not the most important issue regarding child welfare is the role parents play in their children’s lives. A major issue facing the protection of children is lack of proper parenting education. According to research by the National Children’s Alliance “More than 3 million American children are investigated for child maltreatment each year. " The site also states that “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually" and even more alarming statics is that “In 2016, an estimated 1,750 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States.” A major part of this issue stems from parents who overwhelmed or are underprepared to be parents lacking the proper resources and parental knowledge to take care of their children.
Substance abuse, also known as Drug abuse, is very prevalent in many countries. A drug is any substance that modifies the body’s normal functioning. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a drug as any substance or product that modifies the behavior of a person for the benefit of the recipient. Substance abuse, on the other hand, is the drug use other than for the intended purpose in a manner that damages the physical functioning of the body. Recent studies have shown that it is not simply a choice whether or not we become a drug addict, it also involves many genetic and environmental factors.
