During the Reconstruction era, the economy was falling apart, but politics and political views were strong by 1877. The Reconstruction era was a period of time when the United States government began to change. It changed economically and politically, with the reconstruction era becoming a period of time when the United States government and its citizens were in turmoil. After the Civil War, everyone had to try and reconnect both the North and South to their former ways of life. This is when things got out of control for various individuals; there were countless questions and not diverse answers. There were many successes and failures during Reconstruction. The South had a lot of issues with reconstruction and their government, which made their politics go wild. For example, "Tunis Cambell was one of the first blacks to run for political office” There were even freed African-Americans that became political leaders. “In Edgefield County, South Carolina, blacks held the offices of sheriff, magistrate, school commissioner, and officer of the state militia.” This was a pretty big success in moving forward into the future, getting closer to having equal opportunity for all citizens, black, or white. Reconstruction was a success politically by the power of the 14th and 15th Amendments. Amendments, which helped African Americans to attain full civil rights in the 20th century. Despite the loss of ground that followed Reconstruction, African Americans succeeded in carving out a major piece of independence within Southern society. African-American people being involved in major government jobs was a success because it was one of the many things that the Union fought for in the Civil War. Whilst the election, around 1866, numerous white individuals and white groups like the Ku Klux Klan, thought that African Americans were not adequate to vote, and if they could they believed that they had to vote for anybody but the Republican party. For example, “ ‘I will not tell a lie … If there was an election tomorrow, I would vote the radical ticket.’ They set in and whipped me a thousand licks more.” The discrimination was sprung into action because the rights of African American individuals offended people, and caused others to conceal themselves, and were frightened to go and do things on their own, because of groups like the Ku Klux Klan. Groups like these intimidated many people, black and white. Many of the groups did not only attack African-Americans when they wanted but also white people. It was all based on the groups wanting to overthrow the Republican party. It got so bad that it ended up making President Ulysses Grant, while in his presidency, leading to end of the Freedmen's Bureau, making it collapse. This was caused by having to prioritize other things that were affecting the United States at that time, but political choices can change people's views and this makes politics fall into a bad light.
