Elie Wiesel describe the horrors of Auschwitz in his acclaimed book Night. So does every other book written about Auschwitz. They all proclaim the distress they encountered, the SS guards, the gas chambers, the crematory, the barracks, the death, hopelessness, and fear. The authors tell us what happened, but we will really never understand the true terrors that occurred. However, Night is written unfiltered.
The prisoners were in constant fear of death. When they first arrived and during selections, they didn’t know if they were going to be selected for the crematory. The prisoners were also beaten for no reason. It became so normal that Elie was not phased when he stated “I let the SS beat my father, I left him alone in the clutches of death”(page xii). Then when reading a sign stating “DANGER” Elie says “Was there a single place where one is not in danger of death?”(Page 40).
In Elie Wiesel’s novel Night, he displayes a theme of desperation and confusion. It tells the story of the Jewish race from the point of view of a teenage boy. Their family then gets split, so the sister and the mother go to one concentration camp and the brother and the dad go to another. When they arrive to the camp, they get split into different sleeping quarters. Throughout the rest of their journey, they experience hardship and torture as in having to be “Pressed tightly against one another, in effort to resist the cold,” (Wiesel 98).
What can we learn about human nature from the book Night? Human nature is the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and qualities of humankind which determines human behavior and motivation. We can learn that there is a lot of examples of human nature in the book Night like losing hope during desperate times, doing anything for food and going to the extreme for pleasure and sex. Night shows us that human nature will lose hope during desperate times, that they will just give up when they're in pain. For example in Night on page 105 second paragraph, it states “I can't anymore . . .
"I tried to distinguish between the living and those who were no long more. But there was barely a difference" (Page 98). As Elie describes his surroundings he gives readers a good image of how bloody everything was, and how the people living were being treated as well. Despite living like the walking dead, Jew’s continued to fight until they eventually lose all the faith and hope stored inside themselves.
In the book, Night, Dehumanization majorly affects the Jews. Dehumanization is the process by which the Nazis gradually reduced the Jews to little more than things. It makes the Jews want to give up. There are many examples of dehumanization, including beating, selection, and robbery. Eliezer was whipped in front of everyone during roll call, “…I shall therefore try to make him understand clearly once and for all…I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip.
For coping with tragedy try to take one thing at a time, talking to those who've experienced the same thing as you and can understand your pain. Everyone in the book Night has pain from one thing or another, it is up to them how they deal with it. And whether or not they carry it as a burden or a message to be delivered to those who will listen. There are multiple tragic incidents in the book Night (By Elie Wiesel) which point to where coping techniques could be used to better deal with the pain and attacks from Nazi German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald (1944–1945).

Traumatic experiences often lead to a decimation of humanity around people. This causes people to distrust everything, sometimes even themselves. In the beginning of the story, Elie explains his general mindset about himself during the time of his depression. The Holocaust, which is such a negative turning point in his life, causes him to lose the will to live as more people were quickly dying around him as well. He recalls the events, and tries to determine the purpose of his survival.

Throughout Night, Elie Wiesel copes with the agony of the Holocaust first hand. Suffering by definition is the state of undergoing pain, distress, or hardship. In Wiesel’s Night, suffering forces people to make inhumane decisions, shatters hope, and destroys self identity. Suffering forces people to be put in bad places where they feel pressured to eventually make inhumane decisions.
People get traumatized when they see death right in front of their eyes, some even go insane. Like in the book ‘Night”, the theme insanity is built up by various characters,because they see one another going crazy that it is no surprise to them anymore and effects them too. As the prisoners see everything going on around them and with the little food and water that they are consuming, they start to get traumatized and go insane. For example, mrs.Schachter screams about a fire that she sees and everyone assumes that she is insane.
