Pi Patel might have thought he was done with his journey, but not quite yet. When he was picked up by the Mexican villagers, he was taken to their village, to be cleansed and to eat delicious food. The next day, Pi relocated to the hospital by police officers. That's where he had marked the end of his story (p.286 pg 2-3). His real story began whenever Tomohiro and assistant Atsuro Chiba came to interview him about the sinking of the Tsimtsum.
Pi’s mentor on the journey was a God. He exercised three religions at once. These religions include Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. “We are all born without religion, until some figure introduces us to God” (58). Pi navigated the threshold when the ship he was traveling on, Tsimtsum, sank in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
When faced with hardships it is typically hard to continue thinking positively but Pi's determination and perseverance prove to be a great example of how even when going through hell you should keep going. In Life of Pi, as conditions on the boat worsen, and a lack of water and food exist, Pi is decided to survive, he reflects on his experience by expressing “Some of us give up on life with only a resigned sigh. Others fight a little, then lose hope. Still others - and I'm one of those - never give up. We fight and fight and fight.
This quote from Life of Pi in chapter 24 I believe is an example of a literary device called foreshadowing. In this quote spoken by Pi, it is able to describe the events to come in the novel. It deals with the truth and his imagination. However it is up to the reader to decide what is truly certain and what is made up from his imagination. It is important to the novel because it relates to religion where the whole theme of the novel is focused on.
Early on in the book, it was very apparent that Pi took religion very seriously. His childhood, however, was about trying to find that perfect religion for him. Pi said, “I am a Hindu because of a sculptured cones of red kumkum powder and baskets of yellow turmeric nuggets, because of garlands of flowers and pieces of broken coconut, because of the clanging of bells to announce one’s arrival to God” (47). Through Pi’s childhood, he was brought up at a Hindu mostly because of his parents. As a child, one does not usually get to decide what religion he/she is.

The portrayal of his character as being highly moral and religious in the beginning of the story were destroyed in his search of satisfying his basic physiological needs by turning into savagery. At many points in the story, Pi sees himself no different to Richard Parker as we are all animals looking to survive. Throughout the novel, Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, unreliable narrator Pi Patel offers many situations that not only defy common knowledge, but also force doubt, provoking the question of how the plot is even possible. This leads readers to believe that the content being presented is not able to be trusted, as it is hard to imagine it as a reality. In the story, Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, Pi has to go against his religion and fish to get food. He wants to stay alive and he has no other option. Pi is stranded in the middle of the ocean after a shipwreck. In Chapter 61 of this novel, Pi has to go fishing in order to feed the tiger stranded on the lifeboat with him, Richard Parker. He is raised as a vegetarian as part of his religion, but he is forced to go against that principles by fishing and killing a fish.
Life of Pi is a movie about Pi, a shipwreck survivor, and his epic journey of discovery and faith. It is based on Yann Martel’s novel with the same name, and the movie, directed by Ang Lee, makes use of magical realism to convey many themes related to life and spirituality. Many significant symbols are also used to showcase the characteristics of magical realism. In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
Yann Martel 's, Life of Pi, shows the many miracles of god by giving Pi many relations to him during the 227 days that he is lost at sea and still giving him the happy ending that he receives. The book makes many references to a couple different religions. Christianity being one the religions mentioned. When mentioned it is noticeable that Pi had relations to Jesus and Christianity before, during, and even after his time at sea. Some of these relations helped him survive and keep going all that time.
In Martel’s novel, the idea that through faith, one can find salvation, is present during Pi’s times of doubt. Pi believes in three different religions at the same time, he is amazed and in awe of the different beliefs and wants to get closer to, and love God by practicing them. His actions are questioned by many and the idea that he should only believe in one thing is pushed on to him by his family and believers in the church. His belief in multiple religions helps Pi find peace within himself, feel connected to the world around him, and realize his suffering has meaning. Even so, Pi still struggles with his beliefs: “But God 's hat was always unravelling, God’s pants were falling apart, God’s cat was a constant danger, God’s ark was a jail, God’s wide acres were slowly killing me, God 's ear didn 't seem to be listening.”
The movie begins with Pi describing how he was introduced to religion through Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Pi states “None of us know God unless he is introduced to us.” Pi says that throughout his life he came to know a few of the Hindu gods through stories about the world and through experiences. He says, “the Gods were my super heroes growing up.”
The theme in Life of Pi is without a doubt the hardships in order to survive. The whole novel is about enduring pain, hardships, starvation, dehydration and more. I believe the author wrote this novel to reveal the hardships one has to proceed through in order to keep living. Pi certainly shows how quick life can change from ordinary to a long lasting nightmare. Surely this can happen to anyone, but not everyone can survive the long lasting nightmare.
