Drew Gilpin Faust, wrote the book This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, this book was about the suffrage in the Civil War. Although more specifically the book goes in depth about the death of the ones who was in the war as well as the spiritual. Since this was back in the nineteenth century, they have not had the access to the medical technology that we do today. This then led to many deaths from “infections, disease in the camp, and that doctors did not have the knowledge to use clean instruments when treating a wound properly” (Faust 4). Though just from 1861 and 1865 it was estimated about 620,000 soldiers died in the Civil War, this is a time expand of approximately four years.
There are several traits that helped Vladek survive once he enters the concentration camps. Some traits that help him survive once he enters the concentration camp is selfishness, his concern about wealth, and him being sneaky and clever. How do you think war impacts soldiers? I believe that there are two different effects war can have on a soldier, a psychological and a physical one. One disorder involved with war is Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, in All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul Bäumer, the narrator, tells of his experiences in World War I and the term associated with soldiers who have been corrupted by the war is “shell-shocked”. On March 5th 1770, British Soldiers shot and killed five colonists and injured 10 of them. The tragic event was nicknamed “The Bloody Massacre”, but the colonists were at fault because they were the ones that provoked the soldiers, they attacked the soldiers, and they created a chaotic scene. The “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” was a girl born into slavery and it also tells about what are life, and God. I think the two stories relate because the both character in the story wants freedom. Also, I think it relates because both side characters in the story seems to ignore the character. “He told me I was his property; that I must be subject to his will in all things (595).”

Not many believed that The Civil War would be more deadly than all the world wars put together. After The First Battle of Bull Run, in the summer of 1861, things became serious and the U.S was about to experience the deadliest war in U.S history. “This Republic of Suffering” goes deep into the effect of the Civil War on the soldiers and their families. The author Drew Gilpin Faust wanted to show the world a side of the war that Americans have never seen in details. Faust showed the death of the soldiers, and the effect that the war had in their families, appealing to the emotions of the readers.

Throughout Maus, Vladek is telling his son Artie about how he survived the Holocaust. He explained to Artie that before the war, life was good for him and his family. He tells him everything about his experience during the war as well, from the relationship he had with his family and Anja, to his friendships with both gentiles and Jews, to things he might of found or kept throughout the war. However now, a few decades after the war, Vladek’s lifestyle has changed drastically from during the war, and even from before the war. Tolstoy’s ability to interweave the environment with themes of materialism and death makes The Death of Ivan Ilych stand out as a piece that criticizes societal values. In his article “Tolstoy and the Moran Instructions of Death,” Dennis Sansom focuses on the influence of fighting chaos in Ivan’s eventual acceptance of his own death. Socrates wrote, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” and Ivan’s life mirrored this until the end (qtd. in Sansom 417) .

Along the way Odysseus battles the wrath of the Greek gods. His wife Penelope and his son Telemachus fight off the suitors for Penelope's hand on the throne. Holding them back long enough for Odysseus to return back to Ithaca. As Odysseus loses all his crew throughout the journey, he finally returns home from his long brutal voyage.
Soldiers in the Civil War faced many hardships compared to other wars the United States has fought in or been involved. The Civil War, the deadliest war in the history of the United States, consisted of many gruesome casualties and deaths as well as triumphs and downfalls. Other time periods did not have to deal with the hardships other US troops had to face. The Civil War was fought in the United States between the North known as the Union, and the South known as the Confederacy. The United States was fighting itself and forcing the citizens of the United States to pick and choose a side.
The death of Ivan Ilyich, explored by Leo Tolstoy is comparative to the Buddhists concepts of suffering. I shall begin to explain this through breaking down each Buddhist concept of suffering and comparing it to Ivan Ilyich. The first Buddhist concept we learn is from the Four noble truths. “All life is Dukkha” Dukkha is usually interpreted as suffering but is means more then this. It can be referred to the basic fact that something about human existence is ‘out-of-wack’.
Brave New World is a novel by Aldous Huxley, first published in 1932. The story takes place in London six hundred years in the future. Humans are hatched in laboratories where ageing is eradicated and people are predestined to live in specific castes. John the Savage is the protagonist and Lenina Crowne is one of the main characters. John is raised on the Reservation and returns to the civilized world with Lenina.
The civil war did reduce sectional antagonism and did not make the United States one nation. These days there are more wars and confusion going on. There were individual states that wanted to have slaves and have there own rules and didn’t was to abide by any state 's rules. The rebellion is what started it all. Violence, cruelty, harshness against slaves,and that is how the Civil War was started.
