“A Subtlety or The Marvelous Sugar Baby” by Kara Walker is her tongue and cheek satirical homage of a sugar-coated half “mammy” half sphinx image constructed in the Domino Sugar Refining Plant in Brooklyn. “Sugar baby” was a massive sculptured that had a height of 75 feet long and 35 feet tall. Walker wanted to show how the wealthy and powerful Dutch West Indies, Winston Salem Tobacco, and other companies with European ties in the western hemisphere, “were built on the forced labor of the un/underpaid and overworked artisans (the enslaved people of the African Diaspora)”. These workers blood, sweat and most times tears refined the sweet tastes from the cane fields, to the kitchens of the slave masters. “The Marvelous Sugar Baby” explored the
Jefferson Cowie’s Stayin’ Alive is a historical analysis of the voices and perspectives from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Cowie, a historian, utilized rhetoric from the everyday Americans to the powerful politicians. This helped to provide accurate depictions and layout the themes of the book about the realities of this time. Whether a person had political beliefs that were to the left, right, radical, liberal, or conservative; times were changing. Stayin’ Alive describes how the fundamental realignment during this time can be broken into two mini books: Hope and Confusion and Despair in the Order (Cowie 11).
In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.
Final “Driving While Stupid” written by Dave Barry explains to his readers why Miami, Florida is the most dangerous place to drive in in the world because of the reckless drivers. Though it is not a fact that Miami has the most dangerous drivers, he explains why he believes it could be the most dangerous by telling the readers the experiences he has been in in many other places. The way he gets his argument across is by using many different hyperboles to emphasis the main point of this short story. In the beginning of his short story, Dave Barry, gives the readers a setting of the “worst darned drivers in the world.”
In sight of the cold war, in 1961 the highest point of the cold war is when the episode known as “The Shelter” in the series called The Twilight Zone was created. The episode covered the possibilities of many particular situations that may have occurred in a desperate time like this if a missile was launched at the United States. At the beginning of the episode, Rod Serling himself tells us “what you are about to watch is a nightmare.” We get a very ominous sense of what is coming due to the eerie music that had been playing in the background, and we soon find out that this episode is just that. A nightmare, in the sense of the event that is occurring but also the constant battle of a nightmare between thoughts that may drive one crazy as well as those thoughts mixed with the people you knew as “friends.”
The Poietic Aspect of Hendrix 's "All Along the Watchtower" Jimi Hendrix, probably one of the greatest guitarists of all time, in 1968 covered "All along the watchtower," a song originally written and performed a few months earlier by Bob Dylan. Even though Hendrix 's admiration for Dylan 's work was well known , his choice to cover a song belonging to a completely different music genre is emblematic. So why did Hendrix decide to cover Bob Dylan 's "All along the watchtower?" In this paper, I will argue that Hendrix 's cover of Dylan 's "All along the watchtower," thanks to its lyrics and sound dynamic, optimally conveys his anti-war and anti-violence beliefs.
1st- Within this excerpt from Kepler’s work called New Astronomy, he describes how the belief that the Earth rotates around the Sun does not contradict the Scripture of God. In order to claim this premise, he builds this idea on a series of arguments and explanations. Kepler first argument elaborates on the idea that people in society produce most of their supporting evidence for their interpretation of the Bible through the use of senses, specifically that of sight. He argues that empirical observations cannot always support their interpretations of the Scripture because there is much that society cannot accurately describe just using their sense of sight. Kepler uses this argument to show that society should not always trust its observations and that even though there is no observed feelings of wind or vibrations, society should not claim that this absence of observed phenomenon supports their interpretation of the Bible that there is a geocentric universe.
Piper Kerman is a Caucasian woman who is well educated, and of a comfortable socioeconomic class. Piper wrote the book Orange is the New Black to expose the injustices of the justice system through her personal account of her sentence in federal prison. Piper has written about all of her experiences starting from graduating college to her time spent in prison, to her release, and writes her account to exploit the criminal justice system and the struggles women face during their time of incarceration. After graduating from Smith College, Piper lived a comfortable, yet predictable life, in Northampton, but yearned for a sense of adventure.

The episode “Nosedive” from the series Black Mirror follows Lacie Pound, a young woman who attempts to increase her overall rating within society, using social media, when she is invited to a wedding from an old friend so she can gain lavish privileges and improve her standing in society. As she travels to reach her destination, Lacie undergoes through a massive change in her development as a character; aspects of her personality can be identified through her interactions with other characters in the episode and it can be seen how much of a compulsive and determined person she can be and how artificial she is. Music’s impact can be seen in every facet of the world today and it is a way to express feelings, tell a story, or prove a point. It can bring people together and can transcend communities, cultures, and ideologies. Although many do not realize it, music has had a profound impact on all human lives, and the lives of all others that have since died. Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come’ is a song that defined a generation while bringing the oppression and injustice that African Americans experienced, on a daily basis, to the forefront of society.
SOC 306I March 12, 2016 Film Analysis: Mean Girls SUMMARY The movie that I have chosen to write a Film Analysis on is Mean Girls, which stars Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey. The film tells the story of a girl named Cady Heron (who is played by Lindsay Lohan) and her family whom just moved from Africa to the U.S. Cady was homeschooled for nearly all of her life until she came upon her first public school; Northshore High School. As she starts her first days of schools, she finds herself with two, who can be seen as, outcast friends named Janice and Damien. They both take Cady into their group and become friends. They guide her around the school and and inform her about the “groups” and “cliques” in the school ranging from jocks to mathletes, she especially points out one group in particular, “The Plastics”.
Girl, Interrupted is a movie that is meant to portray multiple different mental illnesses and how they affect a person’s life along with others. It portrays illnesses that affect mood, eating, and thought processes. At the beginning of the movie, Susanna tried to kill herself with Aspirin and Vodka, but claims she had a headache, and was rushed to the hospital. The therapist she met with 4 days after her incident referred her to Claymoore, a psychiatric hospital, to treat her depression. Right as Susanna moved in, she got cornered by Lisa, because Susanna took her best friends place in the room.
The Intern is a movie based About The Fit, a new fashion company, Jules Ostin (played by Anne Hathaway) is the founder and CEO of this company. Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) joins this company as a senior intern. Ben is retired, a widower and seventy-years-old. After multiple interviews Ben is hired and is assigned to work with Jules, and almost immediately told by Jules that she doesn’t need him. After patiently waiting for Jules to ask him to do something Ben takes initiative and decides to help others around the office.
