Committed suicide is the leading cause of death among military. It can occurs when a soldier chooses to end their life as he or she thinks committing suicide is the only way out of problem. The stress of war, moving oversea to the front, and other personal issues may causes soldiers to kill themselves in the war. All Quiet on the Western Front, an account of the atrocity of World War I by Erich Remarque Paul, shows the real situation and tribulations that the soldiers have faced every day in the front line. Paul Baumer, is a sensitive twenty year old narrator of the novel. He had joined in his early twenty with his classmates and he was in the Second Company of the German army during World War I. He had joined the war in his young age and he doesn’t have much background comparing to the older generations. Paul is used to the front line life and he feels everything was strange to him when he went home for his 16 days vacation. He states, “ Still I do no give up hope. I do not indeed, go to my room any more, but comfort myself with the thought that a few days are not enough to judge by. Afterwards--later on--there is plenty of time for that.” Paul feels the front will be difficult for them and they will be cut off from the society, however, Paul enjoyed being in the front because his classmates and comrades are in the front line. Friendship is the only thing that the soldiers have on the front. However, some of his comrades have a strong background. By the time they returned to their home, they will have their children and wives, while younger generations would have nothing when they returned home. Therefore, as the war is about to end, Paul committed suicide with the “ expression of clam” oh his face because he feels relief when he kill himself in front of the tree. He also feels that the society did not fits him after he returned to home from the war. The “ expression of clam” on his face makes the reader feel like he had found his peace in the
