Three items that will be of great assistance in preparation for my chosen career is the ability to lead and work in teams, speaking and oral communication, and time management. I have chosen to pursue in the medical field as an anesthesiologist. This job includes high-stress situations and requires teamwork, communication, and time management skills. In regard to working in a team, being an anesthesiologist requires you to be on a surgical team. This usually consists of a surgeon, anesthesiologist, surgical techs, and several assisting nurses. Each member of the team has a variety of strengths and weaknesses and it’s important to utilize each person in accordance. Another example is an anesthesiologist team which includes the main anesthesiologist, anesthesiologist assistants, and several nurses. Each member on the team works together to provide patients with high-quality treatment. In addition to working on a team, it’s also key to establish a group leader. Volunteering for leadership positions can improve a variety of transferable skills, such as communication, management, and leadership skills. As an anesthesiologist, you will have to manage an anesthesia team of assistants and nurses. Being the group leader enables you to make decisions and assign roles based on a member’s strength and weakness. For instance, if a nurse wasn’t accurate in converting measurements, but had hospitality skills. A group leader would assess their skills and determine that the best role for that person would be to monitor and take care of the patient. An anesthesiologist meets with the patient before the surgery to ensure that they understand the procedure and are prepared for it. This requires a friendly personality and hospitality being that you should put the patient at ease. Throughout the surgery, the anesthesiologist will monitor the patient and talk with the patient’s family. This is to describe what will happen and to also put them at ease and comfort. Oral communication is key to comforting and providing information to the patient and their family. For example, when discussing the anesthesia and surgery with the patient, you should be friendly and informative. This way the patient knows how the surgery will be performed and they would also feel comfort knowing that the staff will take care of them. If the anesthesiologist was rude or conveyed the information in a confusing way, the patient may feel at unease and concerned on how the staff will treat them during the operation. In addition, these communication skills are useful when working with a surgical or anesthesia team. Since each member on the team is working towards the same goal, each person has to effectively communicate with each other. For example, a nurse should notify other members that they successfully prepared an operation room. This effectively conveys the information that is key in order to progress with the surgery. These skills can be implemented
