Vietnam originally formed a part of the French colonies and a member of a group of countries that suffered under colonialization. With a vast lack of infrastructure and education before French intervention these problems only further intensified after.

Despite the fact that the country was struggling with education and development and already had its own language and rich Asian culture the French chose to ignore this and merely focused on industry to increase profits for France. The already limited education was now only available in French and the people were suppressed, their land became French land and they had to produce what they were instructed to produce on the plantations, as well as being forced to pay taxes to a French government.

The first American president to involve America in Vietnam was President Eisenhower (1953 – 1961). He had decided to create the South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) in order to hinder Communist influence in South East Asia. However it was actually used to create a separate nation in the South of Vietnam in order to fight the communist North.
American involvement in Vietnam only further increased when President Kennedy (1961 – 1963) came to office he agreed with the decision made by his predecessors and once again brought up the threat of ‘international communism’.
