Richard Nixon
Many drastic changes stand out from the early 1970s. It was a time of revolution with Vietnam, the hippie era and politics. One important political figure comes to mind when mentioning this era, the famous president Richard Nixon. Richard Nixon’s role throughout the early 1970s and his presidency made history through the acts he passed, The Watergate Scandal and his resignation.
Richard Nixon was born in California in 1913. After completing his basic schooling, Nixon attended college and graduated from Duke University with a degree in law. He then returned to California to practice law and soon met his wife to be, Pat Ryan. During WWII, Nixon served in the Navy. After the war, he was elected and served in the House of Representatives in 1947 following a position in the Senate in 1953. He then jumped to the larger role of vice president for President Lynden B. Johnson.
After eight years of serving under Johnson, Nixon was ready to run for president. He ran against John F. Kennedy in the year 1960, but was unsuccessful with claiming his seat in office. Nixon …show more content…

He announced in Guam that the United States was going to keep all of its existing treaties with its current allies. Later in August, he issued his very first major address to domestic policy and announced plans to return higher authority to state and local governments. In his address, he included plans for a welfare reform as well.
In early 1970, many environmental issues occurred, so Nixon decided to sign the National Environmental Policy Act which also included the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, The Mammal Marine Protection Act, and The Agency for Environmental Protection. Nixon then announced a military invasion into Cambodia, where areas of communist sanctuaries were helping North Vietnam and Viet Cong.
