Summary: Diversity In The Workplace

Growing up in a conservative Vietnamese family, I was always taught to respect the elderly. A lesson that had gradually became one of my strongest traits. As a produce stocker for Wal-Mart, I would often see elderly customers struggling to reach certain items and would even have trouble carrying their heavy grocery bags. In these particular situations, I would automatically assist these customers with their shopping and unload bags into their vehicle as though it was instinct.
Over time, I have built a close relationship with some of these customers and even became good friends with a few outside of the workplace. Without this trait, I would have never been able to expand my friend base to a wider diversity group of people. In return, these …show more content…

As a fast and productive worker, I would tend to complete my tasks very quickly. During my free time, I would voluntarily move to a different department and provide assistance to improve the overall performance of the store. A job, at least to me, is a place where I can come in and make everyone else’s work easier. Instead of just performing my routinely day to day task, I view work as a place to help other achieve their goals while being productive and encouraging positive results. While helping others, I am also able to improve myself through experience and teamwork.
By exposing myself to various individuals around my job, I am able to grasp how certain people will act in a given situation. Once I was able to understand someone, that will allow me to exert a specific amount of effort to complete a task with that person. I can tell if that person is willing to complete a project halfway or if I need to do more just to finish it. Eventually, when I make the leap to the professional world, these experiences will allow me to coexist and work along with any person that is the polar opposite from me.
