In his book The Oregon Question, author Frederick Merk traces the origin of the Oregon Question to the spring of 1792. Merk argues that it was Captain Gray’s discovery of the mouth of the Columbia River in the May of 1792 that gave the America a claim to the Northwest. According to Webster’s dictionary, there are several definitions of the word “prejudice.” The prejudices we form are usually out of ignorance and fear. The book, Same Kind of Different As Me adheres to the following definition: preconceived judgment or opinion. Both Denver Moore and Ron Hall epitomized the definition of having a preconceived judgement or opinion of each other. Ron Halls’s prejudice or opinion of Denver Moore is one of a homeless person coming to the mission for another handout.
In document 2 it shows how people are living in tenement buildings with small spaces. Tenement buildings don’t have that much space for many people to live in, and if someone gets sick everyone in that small space will get sick as well. Jacob Riis took these 2 photos from document 2 to show how the other half of the people live in tenement building and how they are suffering. The reformers method to achieve their goal is to establish the social organization centered in The Hull House. In document 7 it states that the poor will receive a helping hand whether they wish to educate themselves or to find work.
When it comes to the “knockout game” many people are unaware of what it is. “Knockout game” is assaults which may involve one or more person trying to knock a bystander or a walking civilian unconsciously with one punch. The reason behind this game is to satisfy their amusements or to impress their accomplices by posting it on the internet for celebration. According to Thomas Sowell’s article, “Coming Soon to a City near You: The Knockout Game”, New York authorities have described these attacks as a form of “hate crimes”. These attacks caught New York City by surprise because of how mainstream media suppressed the news about the game.

There are many economic and sociologic problems that face our society today. Unemployment, health care, and a failing educational system are some challenging topics in our society today. The issues that face today’s generation are unique to the pressures of the times and the complexity of how we live. Homelessness is at an all-time high in our country today and it is a situation that effects people world-wide. Being homeless is when you do not have a permanent place to live.
Is there anything being done by the state as the number of the homeless increasing rapidly in Orange County? According to the statistics, the population of homeless has increased compared to the past years. The leaders in Orange County offered no cure to these homeless people until they saw a drastic shift in the homeless population. The author’s viewpoint about that the state should get more involved to help their helpless citizens. First, state should assist the homeless since there is a rapid increase in the homeless population in the orange county.

A shock city is the urban place that represents a massive and rapid changes in social, economic, and cultural life (urbanization) due to many factors, including new models of transportation such as railroads, industrialization, and other factors. The first city that was considered the “shock city” was actually Manchester, England. It grew very quickly, and it was the world’s first industrialized city and the home of the cotton industry, cottonopolis - a metropolis centered on cotton trading. Same as Manchester, Chicago was also the “shock city” of North America because of its rapid growth. Both cities were industrial cities, Chicago rose from a struggling village sunk in the middle of a grassland creek to a metropolis city.
To find out how a city is actually doing it has to see itself from an outside prospective. They will most of the time see that what they though was normal is actually something they grew accustomed to. A way that can lead to planners being progressive is to use a therapeutic approach. This approach involves “the “whole person” to be present in negotiations and deliberations, but being prepared to acknowledge and deal with the powerful emotions that underpin many planning issues” (Sandercock, 2004).

To be effective in community work, it takes a collaborative effort and partnership to bring about changes and advance the community. When working with communities, the planned change model as developed by Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2009) is a tool that can be utilized.
