In A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro, Jamie and Charlotte are being framed for a murder they didn’t commit. The two work together to find the actual killer and clear their names. Charlotte and Jamie have to watch their backs as they close in on their person of interest though, because that person is after them as well. Through it all, Jamie learns that caring about someone often ends in wanting to protect them as he protects Charlotte from blame, emotional distress, and her past. Jamie protects Charlotte from the blame of being named a killer by being worried for her, when she lets the detective into her lab to look at her poisons. Charlotte and Jamie are deemed persons of interest in the murder case. A specific poison was found at the murder scene and the police want to see if Charlotte could have access to it. The guilty looking party seems to be Charlotte, who actually has that poison and many more. “ ‘Wait, back up. You let the detective in. You let him look at your poison shelf,” (Cavallaro 71). Days earlier Charlotte found a notebook in the car of someone who was following them around town. This notebook contained falsified statements about Charlotte that had the capability to do harm to her emotional self. At a school dance Jamie finds Charlotte outside looking at a book, when he realizes what the book says he takes it away from her. “Every line said the same thing. CHARLOTTE HOLMES IS A MURDERER. I snatched the notebook off her lap,” (Cavallaro 114). Someone’s superhero is not always in a cape and flying around town, much of the time hero’s are people that care and will protect your feelings.
