Gabrielle Conklin Karen Libby ENC1145 - Writing About Feminism March 8, 2024 Acknowledging Diversity within the Feminist Movement Throughout history, the feminist movement has created countless opportunities for women, sparking change throughout almost every aspect of life. Thousands of sources and articles speak of the accomplishments of women who fought for equality. However, because there are so many clashes between society and the feminist movement, there is often a lack of attention on the inner workings of the movement itself. Pointless barriers have been set in place, and it is the job of minority leaders to challenge them. Certain trailblazers used their voices to call for change. These components immediately grab the attention of the reader just because they look different on the page, and therefore have the potential to be the most influential segments. The first of these sections is relatively early on in the text and is used as a way to define several of the terms that Lorde focuses on as themes in her essay. Her definition of racism in this segment describes it as “the belief in the inherent superiority of one race over all others and thereby the right to dominance” (Lorde 115). By defining a key concept very early in the essay, it removes any deviation from the truth as well as gives the reader an insight into the context of her work. Applying this to diversity is a bit different than the typical definition. Diversity is normally referred to in relation to people and groups. Instead, Lorde provides diversity in writing styles to show how the feminist movement can welcome all voices. Any creative style can benefit from a powerful movement such as this one, and it is important to showcase an assortment of ideologies. Equality for women is still a work in progress, but if all members of the feminist movement could read and take in Audre Lorde’s essay, it could be one step closer to achieving what has been sought after for so long.
