“American Wolf” written by Nate Blakeslee is a nonfiction novel that portrays the entire life of O-six, a Yellowstone wolf who was born between 472 and 113 in the reintroduction of wolves in the park. Originally only having roughly thirty-seven wolves, it was a difficult start that slowly created a great turnout for Yellowstone. Blakeslee uses different perspectives of the novel by using real people such as Rick, Laurie, and Doug who are main workers in the park. Blakeslee likes to use the detailed challenges of O-six’s life and her rise to becoming the alpha female who completely takes over her pack reigning with 754 and 755. Blakeslee is mainly trying to help bring awareness to the fascinating features of wolves, and that they aren’t just scary. Nate Blakeslee stars in the book with background information on the history of wolves in Yellowstone, and how they almost went extinct in the early 20th century. Blakeslee also goes through the main basics of wolf packs and O-six, who is the main character in this quite unique non-fiction novel. Then he introduces Rick McInture who is a wolf researcher and watcher who is very passionate about wolves and can be seen throughout the book. The author talks about his routine and his methods of trying to track down wolves, such as using collars with radio signals and special tags on them as well. A better understanding of the wolves’ social dynamics and interaction with wildlife is made clear through the perspective of Rick, and makes the story intriguing. He talks about the roles of the Lamar Canyon pack and the challenges that the pups face as well. He uses the entire journey, even the death of O-six, in order to shed light on the love needed for wolves and that they aren’t
