In Krakauer’s non-fiction novel Into The Wild, he tells the story of a young man named Chris McCandless and his crazy adventures all over North America. Chirs McCandless was a 22-year-old, who had just graduated from Emory University and decided to go off on this journey. Throughout the novel, Krakauer follows the trail that took, he meets with many different people who had interacted with McCandless and they tell him their stories. Krakauer also tells the stories of four other men who set out on similar adventures. The men who stuck out to me were Gene Rosellini and Evertt Ruess, two men with similar plans to those of McCandless. All men had some similarities such as they are all men that went off on an adventure to live in the wild, but there were also some differences such as Rosellini’s success at living off the land for 30 years. …show more content…
None of these three men walked out of the wilderness. The cases were different, but in the end, they did not come out. Ruess did disappear and it was unclear whether he died or if he just went somewhere else. In the book, Krakauer writes “in 1934, a peculiar twenty-year-old boy walked into the desert and never came out.” (Krakauer 60). Both Chris and Ruess were young men that just left and wanted to get away from society. As for Chris and Rosellini, they were both able to last some time in the wilderness on their own. Rosellini lasted for over 30 years but in the end, he was found dead, “Rosellini was discovered lying facedown on the floor of his shack with a knife through his heart.” (Krakauer 53).
