The topic of online dating is one that has not been around for very long. In fact the option of online dating only surfaced around 20 years ago, making it a difficult subject to find substantial information on. Aziz Ansari, a famous comedian, recently ventured into a new art form, and came out with a novel titled, Modern Romance. This book focuses on how modern technology has influenced the way we we handle romantic situations and relationships. He also wrote an article for Time Magazine, on his book titled "Everything you Thought you knew about Love is Wrong," dedicated to how the psychology of decision making affects online dating outcomes (Ansar). The article uses the lack of personal bias and relatable stories to connect with the readers. The topic of online dating is one that has people divided into two different sides. One being for the growth of online dating and the other being against it. Aziz is not an expert on the matter of online dating which is helpful because it means he has no affiliation with either side. Aziz Ansari presented his argument to appeal to people on both sides of the online dating spectrum. His argument is not bashing on the idea of online dating nor is it praising the concept. He simply is telling the readers how online dating is a significant part of how romance works today. This establishes a common ground that everyone can agree with, whether they are for the progression of online dating or not. For the people who are for online dating Ansari says, "It’s easy to see why online dating has taken off. It provides user’s with a seemingly endless supply of people who are single and looking to date," (Ansari). This quote is looking through the perspective of someone who is for the progression of online dating without directly targeting the counter side of the argument. In the article, he talks about how he and his friends have had a lot of experience with using online dating websites and apps (Ansari). He uses an example of his close friend Derrick, an avid OkCupid user. He tells the story of Derrick and how he was so easily able to reject a woman because of her preference in baseball teams (Ansari). Showing just how simple it is to eliminate a potential romantic partner just by their profiles. The topic of online dating is especially difficult to get information on, so personal experience is one of the only ways to find evidence in arguments. However, personal experience can sometimes come off as opinion. It is important to get experiences from a wide range of people to produce accuracy. Aziz does not just use his own personal experience. In fact, he conducted several focus groups with hundreds of participants around the world to give him better insight on the matter and to help his argument. (Ansari).
