The men of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, US Army, came from different backgrounds and different parts of the country. They were ordinary citizens, and over the years of 1942 to 1944 they were transformed into one of the world's most elite fighting forces, fighting across the front lines of World War II Europe including the Normandy Invasion, Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. This story is captured in the book Band of Brothers by American historian Stephen E. Ambrose, as he bridges the link between these social backgrounds and the attitudes and behaviors of soldiers. Historians from Britain, Russia and America, all have differing views on the subject. Historical analysis proves it was the combined effort of the Allies in securing victory in Europe, Russia attacking from the East and Britain and America from the West. Joseph Stalin once said reflecting upon the Allied war effort, “Britain supplied the time, America supplied the money, Russia supplied the blood” summing up the roles of each nation in achieving victory. American historian Stephen Ambrose in his book, Band of Brothers, tells the story of the Easy Company and their actions throughout the war, as well as the operations of the U.S. forces in Europe. The book practically disregards much of the involvement of the British and portrays the US troops as saving Europe for the Allies, as stated in a 2001 article from the British newspaper, the Guardian, “...the lack of reference to the British war effort, and the implication that the Americans won the war in Europe infuriated the veterans.” Though a member of Easy Company, David Kenyon Webster portrayed a seemingly opposed attitude towards the British troops which had been evident when Stephen Ambrose wrote Band of Brothers. Webster hand drawn picture in 1945 of a British trooper and a German trooper, portrayed the British as being laid back, lazy and dirty. There existed and still exists a level of tension between the British and the Americans regarding involvement in World War II Europe, and Ambrose would have been writing from the perspectives of these Easy Company
