December often symbolizes the time of stagnation and death, which is a fitting for this short poem. In the year of 1936, the Great Depression was on the rise and
An Ode to Halloween As the leaves fall off the colorful trees, Fluttering to the ground with a slight breeze, They make barely a sound, Like a feather as it hits the ground, Bright colors, yellow, orange, and red, Like the feeling on Thanksgiving after being well fed, The leaves fall in a pile, one by one, And mark the time when summer is done, The leaves bring color to the crisp air, Bringing happiness, which can be rare, Appreciate the beauty of each leaf, As the departure will bring

In James Whitcomb Riley’s poem “When the Frost is on the Punkin”, he explains in detail what his speaker loves about fall mornings. From this poem, we can tell that the speaker likes the crispness of the air, the sun, and the colors of a beautiful fall morning. The speaker likes the cool air of autumn. The poem states, “When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here.” By expressing this line, he shows us that he is ready for the cool air of autumn after a hot summer.

Allow me to present to you the poem “November” by Lorna Davis. This beautiful piece uses vivid imagery to describe the desolate and melancholy turn of seasons between October and November. It is a classic Shakespearean sonnet, made up of three quatrains with perfect ABAB rhyme schemes, a volta, and a couplet. The author has really taken advantage of this structure to amplify the messaging by grouping together lines with similar meanings to create poetic rhythm as well as isolating certain parts to allow them to stand out more. If you look at lines 3-6, there is a motif of things deteriorating; the trees “have grayed”, the sunlight is “cold and tired”, and the “fruitful time’s approaching end”.
Flowers in bloom and bright colors always seem to represent Spring, a metaphorical time of birth/re-birth, Spring is one of the more favorable seasons. Grey skies, a cold breeze, and brown leaves are associated with Winter, a very gloomy and depressing season. One example of Winter being used in a form of Literature is in the song "California Dreamin" by The Mamas & The Papas the prime lyric being: "All the leaves are brown", "and the sky is grey"," I've been for a walk", "on a Winter's day" (Mamas & The Papas, California Dreamin') and so on. In literature, a character drowning is an indication of a re-birth, their life flashes before their eyes, they see god or what have you. If they come back from this experience alive they are a permanently changed person although more likely than not,
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn vs. The Adventures of Huck Finn Have you ever had a friend that would risk their freedom for your safety and well-being? This situation occurs in the book, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” written by Mark Twain. The main character named Huck experiences this feeling with his runaway slave friend named Jim. Jim is considered a runaway because he belongs to a women named Mrs Watson. Huck has an issue with this because he comes from a very civilized branch of family, and would be frowned upon to be helping a slave become free.
The connotation of this story is mellow, calm, and happy. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day: the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.” (Jackson 1). This citation reveals that the setting is very calm and good. The connotation affects the theme because as one reads the story, the reader keeps thinking the story will end out good because of the words used to make such a positive connotation, but in the end, it turns out to be bad.
“Hurt Hawks”, by Robinson Jeffers, tells the story of a hawk whose wing is hurt and a man who makes the decision to take the hawk out of its misery by killing it. Jeffers describes the hawk in the first stanza of the poem by stating, “The broken pillar of the wing jags from the clotted shoulder, / The wing trails like a banner in defeat, / No more to use the sky forever but live with famine” (Lines 1-3). Jeffers is describing the hawk’s broken wing as the bone protrudes from the skin and blood has clotted on its wing. He describes the wing as white like a flag of surrendering to his fait.
As the song recurs multiple times throughout Hang’s life it aids to reveal her character development throughout the course of the novel. The song is further used to portray the mood in Vietnam especially significant to Hang and her childhood. The lyrics of the song describing autumn use specific words such as ‘dead’, ‘barren’ and ‘silent’ in order to impart a sense of lifelessness and eeriness, this furthermore establishes a similar tone in Hanoi. The darker and depressing tone caused by this stillness contributes to the underlying sadness present in Hang’s

The poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan is to make the readers understand that there is hope for the ones who got, or even get bullied in school. Bullying happens every day in a regular school day and probably not on school days. “So we grew up believing that no one would ever fall in love with us, that we’d be lonely, forever.” (Line 23) The poet explains how by the countless names that the bullied endured, he thought no one could ever properly love the mistreated.
The poem "Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye speaks about how you experience kindness and what it really is. The main point in this poem is that in order to experience people's kindness you need to experience hurt, sorrow, and loneliness. The author says that when you loose everything and have no one or thing that when kindness comes along it lifts you up "and then goes with you everywhere/ like a shadow or a friend" (33-34). When portraying this message the author uses a sad but hopeful tone to send the message she wants to say. This tone helps portray the message because you can feel how sad someone is when they are lonely and they have nothing.
