Everyday we see heroes in our fiction that’s written and usually directed into a real motion picture. We often see real life heroes too, from someone working to help children in poor-economic countries find food and housing, or someone working in a lab to find a cure for HIV. Heroes exist all around everyday, but are they born that way? Are they pre-destined to change the world, have an unlimited supply of self-esteem, or have perfect lives at home? Of course not, they are normal people who came from all walks of life, and all kinds of archetypes. Overall, the hero has a call to adventure in some way or another by another world that is unknown to the character. The Magicians by Lev Grossman uses this archetypal pattern in the story and it begins when Quentin is called into his journey. Basically, the hero has a call to adventure in some way or another by another world that is unknown to the character. Brakebills tracks his magical abilities and allows him to accidentally discover the school of magic. He runs into his first test which is a literal test to get into Brakebills in which he passes (Grossman 17). The character hero (or soon-to-be) endures a test or multiple tests according to the pattern which happens to Quentin in his story, and this helps prepare the character for potential risks and adventures to come. Quentin runs into his first mentor-type figure Eliot who is a bit cold at first but he teaches Quentin the secret parts around Brakebills and all of the street “lingo’. They also begin to talk lots and form a bond with one another. His second mentor would be the School Superintendent himself: Dean, as well as all the other teachers, who teach him magic and the skills to execute it (Grossman 28-38). What certain attributes and/or actions need to exist or have happened to make a character become an archetypal hero? Especially from an outcast? The hero character in fiction often is presented as courageous and unafraid to risk life and limb for what they believe in, following the hero’s journey. People wish to be heroes in one way or another to establish meaning into one’s own life. Quentin builds up his heroic nature after he becomes well-versed in the field of magic and the magical universe. Through his hard sessions of studying over the years, completing all tasks, speeding through 1st year, and fulfilling lots of practice. Suddenly when threats begin to arise to threaten the place which has brought him out of his shell he will stand up to the task to defend it. He does this and other hero’s will do the same because it was where they finally felt included/accepted. Quentin and other hero’s feel this way because of the friends they make that are usually similar to them and their understanding environment. Thus the hero continues their hero journey.
