A famous actor Christopher Reeve once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Being heroic does not always mean you’re special or well known. Since a hero shows determination, it drives them to help others and go beyond what’s expected of them. Heroes are people who go beyond expectations.
As humans, we tend to idolize people from all over the world for their remarkable qualities, bravery, actions, skills, leadership or ways of life. These people are often referred to as heroes, whether it is a leader, Superman, or a local community hero, they all share something in common, and it’s not a cape. What makes each of these people heroes? Their extraordinary character traits set them apart from their less noteworthy peers. While there is a myriad of traits that heroes possess, the most significant ones are their bravery, their willingness to ask for help, and their strength to always do what is honorable.
Like a hero, they responded to those in need and did the right thing of not leaving those people to die. Also, during 9/11 Welles Crowther put his life before others. It is not determined by how they look, but by what what they do, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Heroes are willing to help others by acting quickly, often times just being ordinary people rising above their situation to do extraordinary things, without the expectation of fame and glory. Heroes are always willing to help and act quickly.
The word “Hero” has many different labels. In “ Heroes Versus Sociopaths” Andrea Kuszewski explains what she thinks the word “hero” means to her. In the article she also talks about sociopaths and what they mean to her. Towards the end of her article she starts to compare and contrast heroes and sociopaths so you can have a better understanding. She quoted, “ They are people who possess extraordinary traits of altruism - selfless concern for the well-being of others - even at the expense of their own existence”, talking about heroes.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Looking back on the myths a hero did not have it easy. They faced a lot of tough challenges and had to sacrifice many things to gain their status. Also look at one Hero that is highly idolized and used to day, the American solider. Little kids dream of being them and do pretend battles while lacking to see the true meaning behind them. That heroic meaning is them risking their lives, that they walk away from their families knowing they might not come back.
They act in life-or-death situations with real risks, not on the edge of winning or losing in a game. Roger Rosenblatt’s editorial, “Man in the Water,” talks about the crash of January 13, 1982, and the heroism shown from this incident. He talks about four heroes Donald Usher, Eugene Windsor, Lenny Skutnik, and one unidentified hero. Roger Rosenblatt mainly talks about this hero, his identity unknown, who selflessly, while bobbing on the tail of the sunken plane, continuously handed over his own lifeline and floating ring to strangers. In paragraph four the author says this about the mystery man: “For a while he was Everyman, and thus proof(as if one needed it) that no one man is ordinary.”
Desmond Doss Heroes are people who make a difference for the better. They are the people who are willing to sacrifice themselves for a reason, the individuals who have greatly influenced others by doing extraordinary deeds. One hero that many individuals admire is Desmond Doss because of his selflessness and perseverance under fire. This hero lived a very religious life. He was born of the seventh of February, nineteen-nineteen in Lynchburg Virginia.
Heroes are men who differentiate courage or ability, they are venerated for their deeds and honorable characteristics. Heroes are the people who will be confident enough to show bravery and determination in times of trouble. Ordinary people like me for example, should be inspired to do so. Beowulf is a hero, Achilles is a hero, and Hamlet is a hero and there are many more. Reflecting back on these heroes reminds me that our world could do better.
“...to be a hero means you step across the line and make a sacrifice…” (Philip Zimbardo). It is not easy to give up things. True heroes understand that sometimes they have to give things up, sometimes their lives. It’s not to ‘get what they want’, it’s to make things better for everyone.
A hero strives for a greater good. He goes to extremes to achieve his objective and, in this changes the course of history. He has the will to do what is right by himself and others. Although harm may befall him, a hero will risk his life to achieve his objective; no matter the outcome. A hero’s actions to victory must be noble.
