In the story the internal conflict experienced by Charles Halloway was the urge to become young again. On page 131, Charles Halloway says “You know what I hate most of all Will? Not being able to run like you anymore.” (Bradbury 131) This reply from Charles has a bitter tone and is said in an envious manner that resonates with self-pity. This display of jealousy towards Will shows that Charles Halloway, deep down, despises the fact he is elderly and wishes to be young again. As with any person, they will eventually age and start to become restricted from enjoying all life has to offer. On page 277 it reads “Very simple.” The whisper bent low. “Stop the heart. Why not he (Charles) thought vaguely.” (Bradbury 277) In this scene the Dust Witch is essentially killing Charles and he has a surprisingly submissive reaction towards it. In life, people tend to give up in the face of a insurmountable force. This type of submission is demonstrated by Charles and, as a result, shows that he too has finally given up as he concludes there is no other way out of this desperate situation. Upon giving up, however, Charles is aware that both Jim and Will need his help and thus the external conflict is derived by the fact that Charles has a duty to protect these children, but at the same time he knows that the freaks have won the battle and he is now committed to dying at their hand. On page 187, Bradbury uses allusion by quoting, “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” (Bradbury 187) This sentence is a quote from Shakespeare’s work called Macbeth, so Bradbury is alluding to Shakespeare. In the context of the story, it is referring to the carnival which is labeled as “wicked”. The pricking of thumbs refers to the anxiety or foreboding feeling felt by Charles. So when relating this allusion to Charles Halloway, it can be said that this allusion is describing Charles’ intuitive feelings being stirred because of what the carnival has done thus far. In other words, he is becoming worried about his safety and influence the carnival has on Green Town therefore making him think of what the near future holds for him.
