In the political cartoon that I chose, the speaker is a cartoon artist. The author’s name is Bill Mauldin from the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper . The occasion of this political cartoon is in April 1968, around the time of death of MLK Jr. In this cartoon, the audience is the readers of the Chicago Sun-Times. The purpose of this cartoon is to tie together the thoughts of the nonviolence movement by showing Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The subject is about how Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, however, Mahatma Gandhi is explaining how his assassin thinks he has really killed him. This political cartoon’s tone shows unity between Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
CULTURE
Before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, he always paid tribute to Gandhi as one of the most important sources of his own values. Gandhi had a massive influence on the Civil Right movement as well as King Jr. The black Civil Rights movement had been an on-going process for about a hundred years, and it finally caught the nation’s attention in the sixties. Because it was effective in India, King Jr. adapted Gandhi’s idea of civil disobedience to the Civil Rights movement in the United States. The 1960s, although there was no slavery, was still filled with unfair laws against African Americans.
