Natalie Wilson's essay, Civilized Vampires Versus Savage Wolves: Race and Ethnicity in the Twilight Series, deconstructs the different racial categories of Twilight and analyses the stereotypical differences included. She also analyses how the author includes these stereotypes without rousing the curiosity and suspicion of young adults. Wilson claims that whites in Twilight are civilized enlightened humans while anyone who is not white is seen as inhuman, savage and uncivilised. This distinction allows whites to hold white privilege since their civility makes them more human than those who are not like them. She explains that The others are usually depicted as animalistic,violent and backwards in comparison. With this claim she wants to enlighten others about the dynamic depiction of white supremacy that is hidden in the depiction of creatures such as vampires. She compares the vampires of a specific race to those of other races as well as the vampires to werewolves. She points out that Jacob lives in a place that's mashed together out of random parts and that has small windows as opposed to the Cullens who live in a large white amanor. This comparison represents Jacob's tribe as backwards and not on par with the sophistication of white privilege since they are in obvious poverty. She even explains how their standard of beauty is different. While the Natives are exotic and described with nouns representing animals; the Cullens are described as angels, or being of perfection who are pale and flawless.
