Coddling of the American Universities:
Recently, in my college rhetoric and composition class we read the article The Coddling of the American Mind. This was an article written by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. This piece was published in The Atlantic in September of 2015. Greg Lukianoff is the president and CEO of a foundation called Individual Rights in Education. Greg Lukianoff is also the author of Unlearning Liberty. Jonathan Haidt is a professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business, and is teaching in the Business and Society program. Haidt is also the author of two books: The Righteous Mind and The Happiness Hypothesis. These two authors are very intelligent people. One of the issues that is important is the fact that the academics fear their job and the education of their students because they’re afraid they’re going to offend someone. The authors state this by giving an exact quote from an educator. “I am a Liberal Professor, and my Liberal students terrify me.” (Lukianoff & Haidt, 2015, p.44) The authors also talk about how they fear the education of the students because of this. “Schools may be training students in thinking styles that will damage their careers and friendships, along with their mental health.” (Lukianoff & Haidt, 2015, p.48) Lukianoff and Haidt recognize that they’re dealing with the issues/trigger warnings in the wrong way, and trigger warnings diminish critical thinking skills. This quote explains exactly that. Students are not only missing major parts of history, because the subject is too sensitive, but also are not learning the subject well. This is about presenting multiple examples to build a case in which the authors make a statement about the examples. One example of the authors doing this is ‘“free range” childhood became less common in the 1980s.”(Lukianoff & Haidt, 2015, p.49). The authors here have given a statement, but then continue to back it up, “The surge in crime from the ’60s through the early ’90s made Baby Boomer parents more protective than their own parents had been. Stories of abducted children appeared more frequently in the news, and in 1984, images of them began showing up on milk cartons.”(Lukianoff & Haidt, 2015, p.49). The authors here are giving the examples to show why the protectiveness started happening, compared to what they were back then. “In response,many parents pulled in the reins and worked harder to keep their children safe.”(Lukianoff & Haidt, 2015, p.49).
